I search a Captain

Hello,
My name is Lilian LE GALL and I'm french. I'm 22 years old.

I left France on the first of March with my bike and I crossed Europe to Macedonia. From here I took a plane to nairobi in kenya, and I crossed tanzania, zambia, botswana and south africa with my bike. I'm now in captown and I want to go to ushaia in south america by sailboat to continue my world tour. That's why I'm asking for your help, in order to find a sailboat captain who would agree to cross the Atlantic Ocean with me. I want to leave as soon as possible.

Thank you for your concern,

Lilian.

Re: I search a Captain

Lilian,

good luck in finding one for this route. Cape Town to Cape Horn isn't a very popular route with sailors, even less so in the southern winter. You have mostly contrary winds throughout the year. Most popular routes in the Atlantic head in direction of St. Helena to further move up towards Brazil or to cross the Equator.

Another point to consider is that sailors in Patagonia aren't that common. While they might be ok adding another boy to the crew, a fully kitted out expedition bicycle might be a little harder to sell. Or as my grandmother used to say:

Good luck.

Re: I search a Captain

This may sound a little daunting but if you can make your way back up Africa and travel across to the Canary Islands, you would have a significant Greater probability of crossing the Atlantic with a participant in the ARC rally which takes place each year. Might even find out if you can contact registrants early. Then once in St Lucia it's a down wind trek to S America on another or continuing boat.
Cheers

Re: I search a Captain

Bonne chance ! ,

Just another thought...It was 50 years ago but I have crossed the Atlantic twice on freighters from West Africa to the US. The best part was both passages were free at the Captain's grace and one time he also transported my motorcycle. Hang out at the docks and talk to everyone. That is how I found free trips.

Re: I search a Captain

You might have luck to board boat going from South Africa to Brazil or (as mentioned) to the Canary Islands. Just to note, South Africa is closer to most of the Brazilian coast than any part of Argentina and (as mentioned) Brazil has mostly favorable winds.

Best of luck on your adventure. Please update when you figure out where/how it ends up

Have you considered traveling on a tanker or cargo ship?
Cost is about $100 a day plus port fees and insurance.
GONomad.com may help.
Stay safe.
