I don't think he's saying sail straight out 40 miles then head south...he's saying stay within 40 miles of the coast. A straight line between the cities will take you +/- 50 miles offshore.
Ah, that makes sense; thanks!

We are open to suggestions on going straight through or jumps and are flexible to leave any time after November 26. We are also considering continuing on the ICW to Charleston, and departing from there.

Most of the discussions seem to be about 'where exactly is the Gulf Stream'
There are many totally free excellent apps that will show you (as well as swell hgt/direction, wind strength direction etc). Try 'Windy'. It is slick, colorful, and in my experience spot on for forecasting. (20yrs at Sea Naval Officer and now professional delivery skipper - Charleston based)

...also you can go directly to NOAA's RTOFS for Gulf Stream imagery:

http://polar.ncep.noaa.gov/global/monitor/

Or, if you have a GRIB viewer which supports it, like SailGRIB WR, then you can download surface current data in GRIB format directly from Copernicus.

"Windy" consolidates data from these and other sources and presents it very nicely.

Re: Beaufort, NC to St. Augustine

Did you get offshore? We hopped down Georgia, long days but doable.

Airborne (Jay and Louisa) are in your area and will be making the transit to St. Mary's in one shot in the near future.
