Available Crew From Philly

About Me:

I'm p̶r̶e̶t̶t̶y̶ very new to sailing, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to jump into the deep end and make an account on here, right of the bat. My only experience with being on a boat crew was rowing; so until longships start coming back into vogue, I don't have much useful experience for work above deck; though I do have the will to learn. That said; I am a better than average baker and cook, so I wouldn't be useless in the galley. I'm also fairly decent with computers, having built a few; as well as coding a few programs/apps; so I might be useful when it comes to troubleshooting computer/software. I've also have a fairly decent amount of outdoor rock climbing experience, so I know that if it comes down to it (while I don't love heights) I know I could climb a mast if it had to be done. I'm generally pretty handy, I make good drinks/cocktails, and I'm pretty laid back. I am a vegan, so if I turn down a chance to go fishing, don't take it too personally lol.

Sailing Experience:

Aside from knowing the Orinoco Flow like the back of my hand (thanks Enya), I have no experience setting "Sail Away".

Sailing Qualfications:

1) PA boating safety certification
2) A sense of humour
3) A desire to learn

Aside from the boating safety card, I have no certification. As I said before, I'm new to this lol

Nautical Miles Logged:None sailing, though I have maybe 50 rowing crew and misc boating activities.Home and familyOccupation:Student, antique/rare camera and photographic equipment dealer, former bartender, freelance music producer and photographer

That's the goal, lol. They best way to a man's heart is through his stomach. I have a theory that the best way to a ships deck is through its galley lol.

So Swab,
What kind of crew position are you initially looking to do? Day sails to get some experience?

Day sailing was what I have in mind, but that's due to me thinking that's what's most likely to be offered to me due to my skill level. That said, if some one offered me a chance to crew for a trip that lasted a few day; or even a week or two, I would heavily consider it.

Re: Available Crew From Philly

We might be able to help you out w/day sailing (when the weather warms up) and some overnights so you can get the feel of a boat and what needs to be done. Would suggest this approach vs. just jumping on an offshore boat for several days to make sure you like it and have sea legs.

Some prerequisites (good winter project) would be to read "how to sail" books. One book I always thought was good, was the Handbook of Sailing by Bond. It has good written descriptions of techniques combined w/many illustrations to help visualize the process.

Another would be to watch the movie, Capt. Ron, then you'll understand the context of "swab". (for humor)

Re: Available Crew From Philly

Thanks for the tentative offer. If your offer still stands when the weather warms up, I fully expect to take you up on it. In addition, thanks for the reading recommendation. I haven't read a good non-fiction book in too long, and the fact that it has pictures is definitely a welcome surprise, considering how practical and informational the book is said to be. I'm going to try to take some navigational courses from the Coast Guard soon; so hopefully, that, paired with my astronomy knowledge can come in handy sometimes. I haven't heard of Capt. Ron, but if I have time this weekend, I'll be sure to watch it.
PS: I checked out your blog, and I'm really liking it. The propane holding tank that you made looked so professional I almost couldn't believe it wasn't store-bought.
I hope everyone in this thread checks out your blog; it is a gem.
