Please Help - Turkey to Thailand
We're looking for advice and additional information on moving our Catamaran from Turkey to Thailand. We’re open to using the services of a yacht delivery business and or skipper and crew and or shipping company?
Has anyone done this passage recently? What is the pirate activity like in and around Somalia currently? We’ve heard it’s significantly down to what is was 2011/2012? Would one travel East, considering potential pirate presence in and around Somalia, or travel West and go the long way around? Is anyone aware of convoys that travel this route or have plans to do this route in the near future?
We received a quotation to ship the boat a similar distance and the cost implication was around 100k USD which we felt was outrageous (the yacht in question is a 44 foot). Does this appear to be the going rate to relocate a boat? Can anyone recommend a few options in terms of shipping businesses and or skipper crews we could be in touch with that would consider this delivery?
Any advice, suggestions, recommendation would be highly appreciated
Cheers garth

Is sailing down the west African coast all that safe?

Avoiding the obvious countries why not? haven't checked Jimmy Cornells Guide (so you might need to go via Brazil for downwind sailing) but don't overlook the islands on route like St Helena which is just off this line and way out from the Gulf of Guinea.

8 attacks on ships in the Gulf of Aden this year including 4 in April... And you think a sailing boat is safer??

Re: PLEASE HELP - Turkey to Thailand
I'd suggest the gentlest route for the boat would be Turkey-Gib-Canaries-Carib-Panama then on across the Coconut Milk run to Thailand... adds a couple of thousand miles to the SA route but much kinder on the boat..
Drop me a line if you find my personal details on here of interest and we can work something out from there..

I like this route suggestion. Caribbean, Panama, Galapagos, south Pacific. I'd take my time doing it too!

True, but I am not sailing it, however, you might and Garth might want to pop home to SA for a quick visit.
