Interesting. I've been living in the Red Sea area (Hurghada all the way south to the Halayeb region for the past 8 years or so (out of a total of 20 years here). Haven't heard of any "imminent threats" here as of yet. However, with that being said, the Sinai part of
Egypt is somewhat a "world apart" from mainland
Egypt. Even so,
security checks here have become more frequent with police sometimes going from building-to-building, flat-to-flat checking ID's and foreigner's visas. 20-years here is enough, I'm outta here for good in 10-days. Used to be a great country to live in....now, not so fun since the 2011 revolution.
Still a great place to visit and I highly recommend it as a
vacation destination. Enjoy the people (they're usually wonderful individuals), the
diving and deserts, go see the pyramids and the Cairo museum....but don't stay too long. Enjoy yourself, but go home.
