Haul Out in Malysia or Thailand ?

I am planning to sail from Australia to Indonesia, Singapore, Malysia and Thailand this year. I would like to haul my boat out in a safe and secure location around November and leave it for a few months whilst I return to the UK. Boat is a 46ft. monohull, beam 14ft, draft 7ft and weight around 18 tonnes. Looking for suggestions from those who have gone before for a good place, preferably with a travel hoist rather than a crane or marine railway.

wavemaster in langkawi had a great operation back in 2003 when we hauled there,
also friend has just hauled at boat lagoon in phuket,good service but channel is narrow and shallow at low water.

Hi Richard,

We arrived at Pangkor Island marina yesterday. They have an excellent haul out and dry stand area. They use a sealift to haul out (much better than slings) James the manager speaks excellent English and goes out of his way to help. It is one of the best facilities we have seen in Malaysia so far.

Malaysia will be by far the least expensive option in the area. I have hauled at Rebak on Langkawi. They would have no problem with a boat your size. It is also easy to arrange for someone to check on your boat from time to time. There used to be a monkey problem but they appear to have reformed themselves (into dead monkeys most likely).

We are currently on the hard at Boat Lagoon,service is first class and labour is very cheap {about $80 a day for 2 guys,they like to work in pairs}. Hauling out is not cheap about Sydney prices but unlike Sydney everyone is friendly and helpfull. Everything is available here there are 5 chanderleys ,machine shops etc and cheap accomadation if you want to stay off the boat.

You do need to pick the tides ,but they give you a pilot .There is always space on the hard but the marina is always full.

My first choice would be Rebak on your route

Boat Lagoon would be my last choice in Asia

The MUCH cheaper option would be to leave it in somewhere like Kudat or Philippines. But this is off your route a bit.

Very cheap by Sydney standards
or by Thai standards?
And do you get the same amount of work done?

We are on the hard in Rebak.

It can be a little difficult getting external contractors to work on your boat, if you are steel however and you want/need a sandblast, then you will have to find some other place.

Hi Richard,
If you want work done you should go to Phuket's Boat Lagoon. It is very difficult to find good labour for most jobs in Malaysia, whereas in Boat lagoon everything is on hand.
I cannot compare the prices but so what if it is cheaper in Malaysia if you cannot find skilled labour.
There is a very responsible company, Boat Care Service, in Boat Lagoon who can look after Robyn in your absence.
Getting in and out of Boat Lagoon has to be done on the high tide and as mentioned by another sailor, a pilot is available. A Swan 80+feet just went in so there is water on the tide.
If you do not need work done Malaysia is a more 'immigration friendly' choice. Thailand has weird rules of who can stay and for how long.

If you want work done, definitely Thailand. If Thailand, then consider one of the shipyards rather than the very expensive Boat Lagoon/Royal Phuket options. As the shipyards become more used to handling yachts, they are getting much more user friendly and some of the European run management companies have set up offices near Ratanachai and Asia Phuket Marine. My personal preference is Asia Phuket Marine just over the bridge from Phuket Town on Ko Siree. The photo on Google Earth 7 degrees 53.06'N 98 degrees 24.53' E must have been taken in Asia Phuket - I recognise the man standing under the bow.
You need not be too worried about the cradle/railway option. Putting a diver down to check that the boat is correctly located on the trolley is standard practice.
