Boat Yards in Malaysia and Thailand

We're looking at doing some work next year - sand blasting below the waterline; spray painting the coachroof and a few other odds and sods.... any boat yards that anyone can recommend?

Has anyone had any work done at PSS Satun?

Have heard Phuket's prices are over the top.... Malaysia's aren't that cheap either as we've come to realise, but it's workmanship at the end of the day isn't it?

Thanks for reading!

No experience of Satun

Do have experience of Phuket - 3x the cost of Hong Kong when I was there 2 years ago. Quality is there, you just pay through the nose for it.

Maybe try Wavemaster in Langkawi - aimed more toward commercial vessels, so may be a bit pricey also.

Satun has a good reputation. Cariad was rebuilt there and most of the labour was brought from Phuket - upto 60 people at one point. I once enquired about Wavemaster, now Bousted yachts and was told they specialise more in larger boats and don't like owners to be around looking over their shoulder but there are plenty of other yards like that.

The painting contractors at Rebak, Elite, did a very good job for me last year, on time and on budget and, providing they haven't gone off the boil (I was almost their first client) I would recommend them.

I also had some work done at Batu Maung on Penang a couple of years ago and was very satisfied. However, there has since been a change of manager and I have heard complaints about overpricing.

Agree with all the above. Labor is reasonable in Phuket but Yard fees are geared to the superyacht crowd. I've heard good things about PSS and bad about Wavemaster but no personal experience with either.

I have friends presently in the Satun Ship yard who specialize in wooden boats - I can ask if the yard if they will do sand blasting of an aluminium hull - the fees are generally much lower than those of Ratanachai slipway and the Boat lagoon in Phuket.
The best place for blasting is in Kudat - Sabah - East Malaysia, again I have friends who have just come off the hard there. Elsewhere the hull below the water line could be sanded down to bare aluminium but not blasted then epoxied and antifouled. If you find Phuket is expensive, then cross off Singapore !
