which way is the best choice

If boat (44' Nauticat Motorsailor with plenty of fuel reserves) was located in Panama, which way is the best choice for a journey all the way to the Philippines.


Choice One


Sail up to San Diego/across to Hawaii/then to Marshall's/Guam/Manila


or


Choice Two


Sail the traditional South Pacific route

I just took a look at the "hop" from Cocos Is. to the Carolines, to English Harbour. That is a distance of approximately 4,220 n.m., in a region of not very strong winds. If you select that route, you want a really good light air sail, and you may need to carry additional fuel, and you might want to enquire if there's anywhere in the Carolines where you could top off again. If you are cruising, there would be an opportunity to stop at the Galapagos, and then head north and west, if that suited you. Some interesting stops along the route, but last I heard, there were pirate problems in the vicinity of Cocos.
