Volcano Spouting off in my neighborhood

About 2 hours ago a local volcano (30 miles away) in Taguytay (Philippines) started erupting. Ash is heading SW, out to sea, for now. Had 4 minor earthquakes before noon here.

We’ll see what happen by morning.

Wah! And the quake down in Surigao suggests this ought not be taken lightly.

Flights to and from Manila International/Ninoy Aquino International seem to be interrupted:

Evacuation (never easy at night) under way:

Re: Volcano Spouting off in my neighborhood

Philvolcs, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, has its updating list of earthquakes in The Philippines here:

https://www.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph/ind...e-information3

The quakes closest to delmarrey are those listed for Cavite province, including at Tagaytay City.

You can read about the complexity of Taal Volcano, and its (probably now former) lake on an island in a lake on an island, here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taal_Volcano

Philvolcs volcano bulletins for Taal Volcano are currently in the 3rd column from the left of: https://www.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph/ind...ano-bulletins3

We’re in upper Cavite and no ash here, yet. It’s 10 pm so we’ll see in the morning.

NHK carries a short news video showing a little of yesterday's eruption:

Re: Volcano Spouting off in my neighborhood

Well, it’s 8:30 AM and so far nothing really dangerous where we’re at. The ash is moving NE over Olongapo and up the coast. There’s no ash where we are at, yet. The winds are in our favor.

They closed the airport last night due to ash in the flight path of landing aircraft.

Re: Volcano Spouting off in my neighborhood

Went outside and we did get a little dusting last night, but not much. Couldn’t see any from the upstairs windows. It’s very gritty like beach sand but dark tan in color. Blends in with the ground.

Re: Volcano Spouting off in my neighborhood

At 0800 local time this morning 13 January 2020, Philvolcs announced that magmatic eruption had taken place in the early hours of the morning:

"Taal Volcano entered a period of intense unrest beginning with phreatic or steam-driven activity in several points inside the Main Crater at 1:00 PM of 12 January 2020 that progressed into magmatic eruption at 02:49 AM to 04:28 AM of 13 January 2020. This magmatic eruption is characterized by weak lava fountaining accompanied by thunder and flashes of lightning. At 2:00 PM yesterday, booming sounds were heard at Talisay, Batangas.

"The Philippine Seismic Network has recorded a total of seventy-five (75) volcanic earthquakes in Taal region as of 5:00 AM, January 13, 2020. Thirty-two (32) of these earthquakes were felt with intensities ranging from Intensity II – V in Tagaytay City, Cabuyao, Laguna, Talisay, Alitagtag, Lemery and Bauan, Batangas. Such intense seismic activity probably signifies continuous magmatic intrusion beneath the Taal edifice, which may lead to further eruptive activity.

"Alert Level 4 still remains in effect over Taal Volcano. This means that hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days. DOST-PHIVOLCS strongly reiterates total evacuation of Taal Volcano Island and areas at high risk to pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami within a 14-kilometer radius from Taal Main Crater. Areas in the general north of Taal Volcano are advised to guard against the effects of heavy and prolonged ashfall. Civil aviation authorities must advise aircraft to avoid the airspace around Taal Volcano as airborne ash and ballistic fragments from the eruption column pose hazards to aircraft. DOST-PHIVOLCS is continually monitoring the eruption and will update all stakeholders of further developments."

Nasty stuff. I hope this mountain calms down. It’s an upper class area for the Philippines. People tend to forget that paradise is hell sometimes.

Re: Volcano Spouting off in my neighborhood

Thanks all for your concern! We’ll keep an eye on the situation. If it blows, we’re out side the fallout range and we have metal roofs. It’s not really a big volcano. The crater ridges are only 1000’ above sea level and the dome is surrounded by a big lake. The lake are having tsunami warnings.
