Queensland, NSW place to keep boat.

Hi all, I'm currently in Fiji, plan is to leave my boat here and fly home for 6mths if possible.

My only concern is ,what if I cant get back?

Just looking options. My boats still in a good to go position therefore I'm considering doing the final 1,400nm home, I can always sail back in years to come.

Any suggestions on where to keep a 14.2m loa ,2.4m draft mono economically in Queensland or NSW, I wont be living aboard fulltime.

Cheers Dale
Sukha.

Bundaburg is one of the cheaper spots and a clearance port

Re: Queensland, NSW place to keep boat.

It kind of depends on where you want to be. Newport, on the N side of the Brisbane River might be an option, too, Bundy can accommodate your length easily, and so can Gladstone, if your insurance will allow you to be that close to 22 deg. lat. The piles in Cairns might do you if you're looking for property that far north. I don't know what costs are like in Tin Can Bay, or Townsville, nor what facilities you require. You could try Lawry's in Mooloolaba, but it is probably pretty full, it's popular.

Personally, although people do do it, I would not want to invite the cockies aboard in a pit at Vunda Pt.

Hope Harbour on the Coomera River. Gold Coast.

15 mt berth $2,000.00 AUD per quarter.
$7,200.00 per annum.

Unmetered power and water.
Live aboard extra but flexible for short stays.
On to it management.

2.4 mt at half tide over the entrance.
Moderate tides.
No storm surge, no flooding river flows just storm water run off.

If you're looking for long term dry storage try Boat Works further up river.
Extensive Marine Industry support and great transport links.

Re: Queensland, NSW place to keep boat.

We spent a cyclone season at Scarborough Marina near Brisbane. Very nice marina and neighbourhood. They didn't require the $5 million liability that some marinas wanted.

Hardstand Storage at RQYS in Manly Queensland is very cheap. I dont know what mono charge is but Cats are at $500 per month.

Thanks for all the replies, Hope island sounds promising as Its in my neck of the woods.

Hi Ann, that's the worry I have, insects and critters, never left Sukha for 6mths before.

Re: Queensland, NSW place to keep boat.

Hi
spent the summer 2010/11 in the Thornislands Boat Yard near Cleveland, south of Brisbane and found it very secure. Not prone to flooding as other Marinas and Yards in River Estuarys, here every thing at its best during the century flooding in Queensland 2010/11. Just read the book "Cruising the Coral Coast" and followed the advice given in the book.
Bonne chance.

Re: Queensland, NSW place to keep boat.

During my circumnavigation I left my boat for six months between pilings on the Brisbane River just off the city of Brisbane. It was secure and I assume cheap (I donít remember for sure but Iím certain I was sailing on a shoestring, Ha!). It was a short dinghy ride to the landing and then a reasonable walk into the city. I really enjoyed it there. I should add that my stay was a number of years ago and I donít know if the piling field still exists. Good luck!

Dale the best thing about Hope island is that there is a Cole's Supermarket right next to the marina. Not to mention some cafes etc.
Cheers

Re: Queensland, NSW place to keep boat.

Dale, we've had dealings with Boat Works, and they are a very helpful place. And, there's depth for you to get up there, if you're looking for hardstand storage. They have courtesy vehicles you can borrow, and an eatery on site. Separate ablution facilities for people who are there working on their boats. Sorry, I don't know the costs, but you could contact them through their web site. The Hope Is. spot, with an entry equal to your draft, doesn't sound fortuitous to me.

Ann

The boat storage hard stand in Bundaberg is at the Bundaberg Port Marina, they have a web site. It's flood free being at the mouth of the river.
