Leaving / mooring a boat in the Marquesas for a few months.
Hello all,
I was wondering if it is possible to leave a boat at a mooring for a few months in the Marquesas and to pay a guardian to keep an eye on things.
Have people done that ?
I want to leave my boat there between April and August. A dry storage solution there is possible but is very costly so I am considering wet storage.
Many thanks,
Wil

Check with Yacht Services Nuku-Hiva in Nuka Hiva.

When I was I Nuku Hiva in 2012 there was a yacht anchored behind us that looked like it had been there for a while. So I believe people do leave their yachts there. Have a video around of the bay which I could try an upload if you are interested.

You can leave the boat in Taohie bay, Nuku Hiva on anchor, it will be safe. Alternatively, in 'Daniel's Bay' Nuku Hiva, there is a new private mooring, ask the family who own it, they will keep an eye on it for you. Info from 2018.

Thank you that's helpful, would you know how to get in touch with this family before getting there?

Theres a couple of guys who have kinda settled there with their boats.. one was an older English guy called Ian who had been there near 8yrs and a young American who had been there a couple of years when I went through in 2012..
As someone said, contact Home
nice people and based right on the quay that services the anchorage and fishing boats.
Best wishes..

Re: Leaving / mooring a boat in the Marquesas for a few months.
FWIW, Jacque Brel's sail boat boat sat in the harbor at Atuona, Hiva Oa for the 6 months we were there and probably for several years until it was finally sold. Just be aware that wind/wave patterns change with the seasons. Tenable anchorages on one side of an island in the winter are supposedly very rolly in the summer. Good thing about the Marquesas is they are usually outside the tropical storm prone areas further west.

Sorry, don't know. You do it on the spot, I suppose.

Re: Leaving / mooring a boat in the Marquesas for a few months.
Like Paul L mentioned. Kevin at Nuka Hiva Yacht Services looks after boats. No mooring but a number of boats are anchored while owners are off island. The big disadvantage to this scenario is for some reason the chains get eaten up. 4 boats we know had to replace their chains after being away 6 months to a year.
My suggestion is to order a length of chain thru Kevin via Papeete and then when you return just toss it and go back to your good anchor chain.
Then again if you are only going to be away a few weeks than not to bother.
Kevin will come out weekly and check all your systems for you
Cheers
