Grey's Harbor, Washington

Just trying to get some local knowledge. How hard is it to get out of the ocean and into Westport? Did you like your stay there? How is the fishing in the bay?

Re: Grey's Harbor, Washington

Can be difficult on a big swell and outgoing tide. Always call Coastguard if there is a swell or rough seas. The public dock can be difficult also if you have to side tie on an on shore wind, had fun watching Dashews trying to side tie in 40 knots onshore. We once spent two weeks there waiting for a weather window to go south. Lots of great cruisers in same situation waiting it out. Westport has great surfing inside the harbor and outside it. Fishing is not what it used to be back in the 70's for Salmon. But spent a lot of the time bottom fishing and cutthroat fishing out of the dink. Always fun. Big fishing derby in September for Salmon and bottom fish.

Town is a mass of T shirt type shops, tacky but fun. Plenty of places for good breakfasts but only one place for good dinner if it still is there and it is right across from public dock. We had ball going to the big chainsaw carving contest, I think it is in September.
Are you on your at this time of year? All things can be different in October.

Thanks Steve, No I am up in BC right now, I was just shopping property there and wondered how good a base it would be. How big is a big enough swell to make it dangerous to enter the harbor? It is hard to find a swell less than 4-6 right now. I will be in Westport in 10 days.
Thanks for the info.

Good luck on your cruse to Westport. I've been watching the weather on the coast on my XM weather and instead of giving a date you might say: we'll be there when the weather window allows. I hear Westport's CG closes it's bar into the bay if waves and weather is too rough but you can call them and get a real answer, you might plan to heave to and waite for smoother weather.
We plan on crusing up the WA coast next summer from the Columbia river, so please report back with your crusig report to Westport.

Re: Grey's Harbor, Washington

Newt, I'd say if I remember right 3 meters out of NW on a pacific high, coastal trough (Squash) and hard running out going is enough to make it tricky. This time of year SW swell and SW wind, lots of it. That Washington coast to 60 miles out is one of the lousiest, bumpiest oceans we have ever sailed in. Seems like it is always 6ft crap from 3 directions. Good luck, stay warm and try to stay dry.
