FREE BEER!!! Cowichan bay
I've just purchased my first sailboat, a well found Newport 28, lying in Cowichan bay for the summer.
I have little in the way of sailing experience, though lots of time and very comfortable on/in/under the water.
anyone who would like to go out for a few hours for some fun sailing, please let me know.
I'm not looking for free lessons per se, rather someone who enjoys being on the water and would like to share their experience (however much that may be) with an enthusiastic newbie.
and of course the post-sail debriefing naturally includes your preferred refreshment.
aloha!

Drag. If I was on the Wet Coast, I'd take you up on that offer in a heartbeat.
Anyway, you have the right attitude; you will no doubt meet some great people out there, find some mentors and become part of the boating community in no time.
Best wishes.

"wet coast" [emoji81]
that's a good one, haven't heard it before. I'm kinda new out here, left Montreal winters behind 20 years ago and only recently thawed out and returned to Canada.
thanks for the encouragement!

Re: FREE BEER!!! Cowichan bay
Free beer!? I'm there!! Let's see, it's probably about a 16 hour drive if I go 80 the whole way... at $3.00 a gallon and getting 24 miles to the gallon... hmm, which brand beer is it?

Re: FREE BEER!!! Cowichan bay
it'll be worth it, it's canadian beer, and you're paying yankee gas prices, so don't complain, eh?

Re: FREE BEER!!! Cowichan bay
I am also moored in Cow Bay. I live aboard and have a few years experience (36). I am presently refitting to head offshore but enjoy going out for a sail from time to time. I'd be happy to join you on occasion. Look me up on the docks or contact me. Cheers!

Congratulations on your purchase. Although I prefer (cough, cough) gas or diesel over air baggers. Just a suggestion now, join the local Canadian Power & Sail Squadron, there are many experienced sailors involved who will be more than glad to help you master your challenges of sail. If you need the contact info let me know. Best of Luck.

Re: FREE BEER!!! Cowichan bay
Hey Yalla.
Well done on getting a boat. I'm a mad Englishman currently staying on the Sunshine Coast with my Canadian girlfriend. We spend the winters in the Caribbean on my 39' Najad. Julia was saying how she misses sailing - she races on J 22 s - and so we'd love to come and have a sail with you (and we'll bring our own beer!)
How do we contact you?
Slowy.

Re: FREE BEER!!! Cowichan bay
alright! thanks for the responses!
little more on my current situation:
we live in north van actually, I've started to look for moorage on our side. i hope to get a spot in Gibsons, it's $6.30/ft. there... can't come close to that in the lower mainland, except maybe far up the river. for now I'm happy to commute to the island.
I'm currently in europe, just helped a friend sail his new hallberg-rassy from north Spain to sardegna. I fly back on June 15th, so anytime after that I'm looking to go sailing. I'm not working, sailing is all i intend to do this summer. a rough plan was to head over every second wednesday, stay for 5-6 days. my wife works, so i don't want to stay on the island all the time. she would join me on the weekend.
I'd also be happy to do overnights, multi-day trips, maybe take advantage of the 2 weeks free anchoring in false creek so she'd be close by, I'm going to put up an ad on craigslist soon.
she has a dodger,
chartplotter with maps, tillerpilot, propane stove and bbq, furling jib and mainsail in good shape.
I'll p.m. everyone my contact details.
aloha!

Re: FREE BEER!!! Cowichan bay
Great post, Yalla! And congratulations on your purchase.
I'm in Vancouver. Let me know if I can help with local knowledge, though it'll be tough for me to get away to do actual time on the boat!
When you bring your boat over to this side of the Straight, make sure you plan for slack water through the passages to get out of the Gulf Islands. You won't believe the tidal rapids you can get in there!
