These past few weeks I crisscrossed the Sulu Sea three times. Of course I was not doing something like sail where everyone says there this
danger.
This said I found a serious issue. For the first time I have seen several large cylindrical floating
steel buoys. They seem to be moored in
water several kilometers deep and have zero lights or
flags.
I saw four in three trips and came close enough to one to require a course change. Further, I did indeed strike something at night large enough to cause cosmetic
hull damage 3.5 feet about my waterline.
Given I have three hulls, span 40 feet, and sail in rough and night conditions, my odds of hitting one are much higher. They are totally invisible at night. One is not very far from the direct approach outside of Puerto Princesa Palawan. These, to me, are a far greater threat than what others fear.
Has anyone been
tracking these and establishing a data base?
Puerto Princesa buoy is near 9 42.533n and 118 52.78e.
Three were found about 50nm from Negros all along same
route I was traveling. I have no idea how many I passed nights.
Does anyone know of central Filipino site
tracking locations?
