Thank you for all the comments! We are back from 9 days at Santa
Catalina and here is the report:
We anchored outside at Descanso in about 85' of
water. On the downside it was rolly and 4th July weekend was a zoo of powerboats and morons zooming around in those overpriced, overpowered dingies. But, hey, worth every penny of FREE and we got to see the Eliminators and Dick Dale on a double billing at the lovely art deco styled Avalon Casino Ballroom. See a show there if you can. It is beautiful.
Riding in for the show, we got swamped by people who think that dingy + Avalon bay = speedboat
race. I got some strange looks while I stood naked in the ladies' lounge of the fancy ballroom trying to dry my party dress & underwear with paper towels!
Shoreboat cost $5 to take me "home" to our
boat after the show. In retrospect, I could have spent the $5 to ride in and not gotten soaked.
There are good dingy docks at both the Casino and downtown. No one messed with our dingy. From the casino ballroom, if you look down at the dingy
dock, it appears like a colorful dingy daisy.
Next morning we couldn't get away fast enough. We sailed & motored around the island and spent the rest of our time at CAT HARBOR. This is definitely the place to stay for sailboats.
We never used a
mooring ball, anchored the whole time.
cheers and happy sailing!
