Can you import a marine diesel engine into Mexico without duties

Hi first off if in wrong place of a duplicate thread mods or anyone just point me in the right direction.

My Volvo Penta MD17C 35 hp engine has 2500 hours over its 40 years but is killing me. It starts first time but I am never sure when it will stop and what fluid will be gushing out. Over the last 2 years I have spent too much on parts that do not exist and when finding a rubber gasket the size of my finger being asked for 45 dollars, I needed 10!!!!!!

So I have contacted Beta diesel in the UK. They have quoted me a delivery price I can live with.

The But is duties taxes etc. On line it seems a replacement marine engine for a boat already with a Mexican TIP can be imported without duty?

Any experience and advice greatly apreciated. I am halfway up the sea of Cortez on the Baja side. My nearest port is Guaymas and I am a 3 day down wind run to La Paz.

Yes, you should be able to import without duties. I’d find someone knowledgeable to do it, an agent, that makes sure everything is done properly. I’ve heard a lot of different stories, much depends on where and who as to what is actually required. It is Mexico.

Any idea what these agents may call themselves?

Why not make your way to us and get beta directly from a dealer there and avoid all shipping and taxes? Company known as “marine ma” in San Diego is an authorized dealer. Great engines

God luck!

NYSail

About 1400 NMiles (did I mention I need a reliable engine)

US dollar

Us taxes duties and excessive yard rates.

Agree about the engines. Just not keen to give US any of my hard earned Canadian dollars at the moment.

Just wondering what the price difference is with the San Diego dealer? Could you pick it up from them in a hire car and take it across the border yourself? What about prop size, pitch and rotation?
Cheers

Im curious about the price differential as well. The BETA people seem to keep the pricing close to the vest.....

Re: Can you import a marine diesel engine into Mexico without duties

Greetings from La Paz.

According to the "rules" a person is supposed to be able to import boat parts duty free if the parts are on a boat that has a current Temporary Import Permit (TIP). However, it seems there isn't a process in place for shippers (Fed EX, DHL) to NOT include the 16% IVA (duty tax.)

Most of the people I know, including us, have someone bring back parts from home when they travel back and forth, either by car or plane. We once brought back a complete Groco K toilet (heavy bronze base, ceramic bowl, seat, and handle) in our two carry-on duffel bags via Alaska Air. (None of the marine stores in La Paz would order it for us because there was a ban on imported ceramics, including toilet bowls.) Got the red light at customs. I told her "el bano es para mi barco" and we sailed right on through.

You probably can't pull that off with an entire engine, however.

I know of several people who could help you remove the engine and rebuild it here in La Paz, complete with a new paint job. 2,500 hours isn't very many for a diesel if it's been maintained. Or you may be able to find a suitable replacement engine that is already here. I'll make a few phone calls and report back.

Re: Can you import a marine diesel engine into Mexico without duties

Importing into Mexico is complicated, and requires a customs broker (agente de aduana) except for relatively low-value items carried with you while crossing. They are abundant in every major port of entry.

Mexican mechanics are good at keeping diesel motors running forever. A marina may have mechanics who can pull the motor, and have it trucked to a machine shop in the nearest big city for rebuilding.

I would go get it yourself with the help of someone to get it back in (for a boat with a temporary import permit).

Re: Can you import a marine diesel engine into Mexico without duties

Hi again, North Pacific.

Just talked to the local boat guru and the diesel mechanic. I'll send you you the mechanic's name and number via PM. (It's a Mexican number, so you'll have to add the country code +52.) He had questions that I couldn't answer from your post and said to give him a call.

They have a combined wisdom of 125 years in the boat industry and mentioned that doing a complete replacement would likely involve prop shaft realignment, transmission work, motor mounts, etc. Not as easy as it appears.

Hope they can help. Good luck.

I do not sure where you are located. Major ports in Mexico would have commercial shipping agents used by large ships. Goggle says the term in Spanish is Agente Maritimo Naval. They normally speak English and would know about tariff free shipping for ship parts. Your boat's status in Mexico might affect the tax. Also there are marine repair shops that might shed some light on the process. Good luck.

Re: Can you import a marine diesel engine into Mexico without duties

Hi, don't know about Mexico but recently had to do the same thing in panama. Here's my 'lessons learned'.

Many of the problems with this are cultural. Locals know what to expect with customs, delivery etc within their country and tend to assume you do as well. They don't know what you don't know so don't think to tell you!!!! This leads to surprises that can be expensive!

Check very carefully what the in country delivery problems may be. The exporters will tell you the shipping charges but this may be just to the dockside in the import country. You then have to get the engine from the dock to the boat. This can incur a charge from the harbour which is basically to get the engine from the ship to a delivery storage facility. Next you have to get it from the warehouse to the boat If you are doing this without paying duty then the engine is in customs bond until it is on board. This may mean it has to be done by a specialist under customs supervision and a customs agent has to see it transferred to the boat You are getting the picture. For me it was about $300US to get from ship to warehouse and the quote for bonded delivery was over $1000. I finished up paying the import taxes as this was far cheaper than bonded delivery but the whole process still cost over $1000. This was because I could not move the boat It would have been much simpler and cheaper if I could have moved to the port the engine arrived at but that would have meant a long trip and going through the canal - twice!!
So get an agent who you can talk to without a translator and discuss the whole delivery chain. Find out which port the engine will be delivered to and find a marina that is used to receiving good for 'Yachts in transit' and try to move the boat to there.
