Australian Marinas - Top Places to See & Eat

Hi All,

I wanted to start this thread, as a sort of continuation on the Australian Customs thread. Some were potentially put off from coming here to visit because of a few bad apples, and this as a Aussie makes me feel ashamed, as we have such a great place to cruise!

From the above mentioned thread, it seems that many places on the East Coast where you need to clear Customs is near, or in a Marina complex. Since we have had many visitors from all over the world whom have already visited our fair land, I thought this this thread would be a good resource for those who want to visit, and will be already informed where to find those special places, and even more important, what places to avoid getting ripped off.

Now I am not too experienced in all places East Coast of Aus, so I would hope that our local Aussies will pitch in to help our fellow cruisers enjoy their visit to our land, but just adding a few places that you would recommend.

Come on Aussies, let's show 'em what we've got!

Here are my few suggestions:

Pittwater NSW
The Newport Arms Hotel - Commonly known as 'The Arms', this place is a legend in the local area.

Gibsons Marina - Nice little Thai restaruant on top of the Boat Sales office.

Williamstown VIC
The Anchorage Restaurant - Right next to the Anchorage Marina. Found this place last week. Food was great, although a bit pricey. Can park the Dink right outside front.

Moolooloba Yacht Club or Anchorage - Best Fish Food from the Trawlers' / Surf Beach

Tin Can Bay Marina or Anchorage outside Snapper Ck

Kingfisher Bay Resort [Fraser Is] Day Facility - Showers / Restuarant / Cafe / Bar

Bundaberg Port Marina Restuarant / Free Shuttle Bus to city / attractions / Supermarket

Rosslyn Bay Marina Restuarant

Mackay Marina Precint Hotels / Motels /Restuarants

Whitsundays - google it!!

Gloucester Eco Resort Free Moorings if you buy a meal - / laundry / showers / restuarant and bar.

Horseshoe Bay, Magnetic Is Backpackers resorts, cheap buses

Mourilyan Harbour Isolated, used to get the local pub owner to drive you up for a counter meal, stop by the markets for you - just north Queensland hospitality. However Cyclone Larry destroyed the pub, so its a bit of a walk but worth the visit


Trinity Inlet next to Marlin Marina, Cairns City centre right there

Port Douglas Marina in heart of 'city' [township]

Portland Roads (Google it)

Lizard Is (google it)

Stanley Anchorage / Escape River / Somerset All to yourself

Seisia Perfect quiet lazy Queensland anchorage

Gove Yacht Club [ almost the last frontier]

Arnhem Land Anywhere you wish to stop - now really the last frontier!

Darwin Look for the Green flash at the yacht club, whilst enjoying a tall drink

Disclaimer: However, 1. watch out for me, I need a big space to anchor and hate jet skiers. Apart from that, I am quite civilised and gregarious. really. 2. Tasmanians are a little different - must be experienced for this to be understood..

I can't speak to the marinas in the area, but there are some great Thai resturants in the Bondi Beach area.

Cruising Yacht Club Rushcutters bay.. Sydney Harbour. Its the home of the Sydney Hobart race and well worth a walk around the marina. The beer is cold and the food is good.
