Adelaide to Coffin Bay

I'm planning on sailing from Adelaide to Coffin Bay next month.

I'm thinking of a night sail to Memory Cove (which looks beautiful), followed by a stop at Avoid Bay, before sailing around the Coffin Bay Peninsula into Coffin Bay.

On the return trip I'm thinking of visiting the Neptune Islands - Great White Shark territory

Any tips would be appreciated.

PS I've sailed to to Port Lincoln previously and plan to save time and bypass it this time.

Re: Adelaide to Coffin Bay

Although not that experienced have done the trip a couple of times...lived in Coffins for about 8 1/2 years till about 2 years ago. Now down at Wirinna.
Memory Cove is a beautiful spot.
There are a few moorings in Avoid Bay which belong to cray fisherman.
We grab one if not used.
Getting in to Coffins can be a bit tricky.
We stay close to Point Longnose then south to no7 beacon.
After that just follow the markers.
Some great spots to visit down that way.
Cheers

Thanks for the tip.

I spend a lot of time in and out of Wirrina too, so I might see you down that way.

Re: Adelaide to Coffin Bay

Having grown up in Adelaide (and not done any sailing) then moving to Europe and slowly sailing back, it always amazes me some of the names they gave the Australian coast. "Avoid Bay", "Coffin Bay".... sounds enticing!!

Let's not forget "Cape Catastrophe" which is to be avoided when big ebb tides collide with strong SW winds.

"Seasick Cove" is another one, but folklore has it's actually place to get out of the weather and take crew that are already seasick, not to become seasick.

The Neptune Islands are ones that would have benefited from a scary name, given it's prime great white shark habitat.

Re: Adelaide to Coffin Bay

I just got back my trip to Coffin Bay a couple of weeks ago. It's a lot of sailing, but if you don't mind a night sail or two you can do the round-trip in a week. Our route to/from North Haven was:

Night sail (via South Neptune Island)
Avoid Bay (anchorage)
Boarding House Bay (stop)
Gallipoli Beach (anchorage)
Black Springs Cove (stop)
Coffin Bay township (anchorage)
Williams Island (anchorage)
Memory Cove (stop)
Wedge Island (anchorage)
Edithburgh (anchorage)

The sailing and anchorages were spectacular .
506 nautical miles all up!
