7.1 Earthquake hits off the coast of NZ

TSUNAMI THREAT UPGRADED TO WARNING

The quake was followed by several moderate-sized aftershocks, including a M5.6 jolt at 5.01am, and a M4.6 quake at 5.03am. A series of small shocks of up to 3.7 magnitude
were felt in Te Araroa about 7.45am.

Shortly after 6am a potential tsunami threat was upgraded to a warning by Civil Defence.
The warning covers the East coast of the North Island, including Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty and the upper South Island.

What we perceive as the solid earth is really fluid, but not on the time scale of our lives.

NZ is quite active. Christchurch was rebuilt quite attractively following the big quake there a few years back.

There was a small tremor/quake recently in the Whitsundays area. 5.8, centred just off Bowen. We were out fishing at the time, felt pretty weird in the dinghy.


People on boats said it felt like a diesel had started by itself.
