Re: Your choice for the worst price gouging transient marina

The most expensive we have encountered was American Yacht Harbor in St. Thomas. In Dec 2006 we paid $150 for a stay of 21 hours. $75 for the dock and $75 for the electricity. Supposed to have been there 24 hours but the other transient boat that was previously in the slip would not leave on time. We circled the nearby anchorage for 3 hours waiting for our turn to dock. Still had to pay for 24 hours even though we were only allowed 21 hours.

Re: Your choice for the worst price gouging transient marina

Most any marina north of New York City. Might be a marina somewhere in New England that charges less but all that I found were $2.50 - $3.00/ft per night, plus electric; in the high rent areas they were a lot more.

So for a 42' boat, after taxes $125-$150 per night. I anchored out but thought it might be convenient to get a slip for a day or so when I was meeting crew and stocking up for the trip south. Called every marina in the area and the best I found was $120 per night.

When I pointed out to the marina owner that I could get a pretty nice hotel room with AC, cable TV with HBO, kitchenette, the works for $85 AND his marina was half empty he wan't interested in lowering his price so I stayed on the hook. Not sure if I am too cheap or too insulted but just could not pay that much for a place to tie a dock line.

I say good for you for standing your ground. I think such marina owners under-estimate the resourcefulness of their potential customers. Sure, it's EASIER to step off onto a dock and into a shower stall, but you stand a good chance of picking up a fungal infection there ... and it iS possible to wash up on one's boat.

He might prefer his marina half empty if he can get that much. Less work for him. If you can sell a plate of pancakes for $1,000 your volume of customers doesn't matter nearly as much.

One reason I bought a boat with an actual shower stall.

But sooner or later you will run out of fools willing or able to buy those $1000 pancakes or they might start eating waffles instead.

Nice thing about a boat, you can vote with your feet, metaphorically speaking.

Island Global Yachting (IGY) has bought several marinas here in the West Indies. American Yacht Harbour was one of them. We used AYH a few times before the IGY takeover and it was reasonably priced and well-run. Now the IGY website doesn't even post their rates--you are asked to contact them via phone or email. The advent of IGY in the area was not a positive development for boaters.

Miami Beach Marina was $3.50 per foot. I would say most of the marinas in South Florida are pretty pricey, with the exception of a few.

taxes have gone through the roof in florida for water front properties..Marinas had to raise prices to keep in business,,, in 2001 I paid 400 per month for a liveaboard,,,in 2002 it jumped to 750 for the same marina

But did you help the rest of us?
Did basically the same thing but sent him a copy of my room bill.Telling him to put it on the wall when he is paying bills.
Knowing what taxes and expences are in the NE i have nothng but sympathy for said marina. If he gets enough of the same he can go to his state reps and realy get as frustrated as i was.....
Vote with your feet and leave.Gota love my grandpa.....
