Re: Your boat's name

Easy to spell
Easy to say on the VHF
Easy to write (possibly a few times on forms)
Easy to remember

and likely that means shortish.

Ideally does not make Skipper look like a prat......

Maxingout's son had a good comment on his blog.

Quote:
16. Other yachties refer to you by your boat name (for example, if our friends on Duetto were talking about us they might say “Exit Only are brilliant mariners”). Remember this when you get the urge to name your vessel La Cucaracha.
That said, we've tended to pick unusual ones. The Seaclipper 20 I'm doing now I think will be called Adar Rhiannon. Then again, I really doubt with it I'll be going though a lot of locks, bridges or calling into marinas.

Re: Your boat's name

Many years ago there was a yacht going round here with the name Imsore, which, according to the owner was pronounced imm-sor-aye. Everyone else called it I'm sore. After a while he gave in and written on his dinghy was this,"Im a little tender too"

Our boat is called Miss Isle which was an intentional play on words. Learned early in the piece that people write it down as Missile. I've been surprised by how many marina staff can't find the boat's name on a list when they try to mark it off.

Re: Your boat's name

Anyone remember the tragic sinking of Trashman? Terrible name for a boat, but I suppose the owner must have been in the business and was proud of it.

We named ours Floribbean Rose. Long, but easy and understandable. We have seem a dinghy here locally that has a cute name...Row v.s. Wade.....seems appropriate.

Re: Your boat's name

"Outta line", and "Wake up" came with the boats. Last boat Steel Sails because I sell steel and that's what paid for it. New boat Freydis 49 is called "Cheorae" she was an Italian boat , play on "what time is it?" I think.
I am going to rename her, I prefer to keep steel sails but my wife likes "Essex Girl" because that's what she is (Basildon) .
Regards
Paul

Re: Your boat's name

So many other people have great names that have become their "brand" so to speak, and I wanted something unique that I could get the dot com URL for.

I spent a lot of time researching boat names, and didn't want something ordinary (i.e. the typical 'clever' boat name that really isn't).
Many people have said that when you travel, people remember you by your boat name, such as: There go the Bumfuzzles, or I just spoke with the Sockdolagerians. So, I decided that I needed a better name than the one I was going to give my boat: Second Chance. The boat deserves better than that too.

I liked the Slovak word putnik, which means, wanderer, wayfarer, pilgrim. Unfortunately, the dot com was used, and I personally think it sounded too close to the word, putz.

I needed something that meant about the same thing, and incorporated the travel aspect into it. Therefore: Travelnik! It's also kind of a free-spirited sounding word, like beatnik. I was surprised that I could get the domain name for it, but I did, and now people will be able to remember us as the Travelniks.

Manana

It can mean lots of things to me. Part of it is forward thinking of my dreams. If I'm pessimistic it can mean i'll get to it tomorrow.

Also one of my favorite Jimmy Buffett songs.

One of my friends in college acquired a boat and went around telling every girl he met, "I named my boat after you." Many of the girls were flattered until they found out the boat's name was "After You".
