Why Would you Blackout the America's Cup Live Streaming in the US

if you are trying to increase the numbers of viewers, sponsors, and promote the sport in general?

Today's races aren't televised in the US (gotta watch football, you know) so why would they block the live YouTube feed?

It seems like instead of promoting the AC, it seems like they're trying to drive people away from it...

US isn't a sailing nation and few there are interested in yacht racing anyway, hence it falls way down on the interested list.

Re: Why would you blackout the America's Cup live streaming in the US

We don't see it because somebody at NBC paid lots of money to someone who makes the decisions who sees what. It's that old "Follow the money" scenario. Just like, when the bills don't get paid by the US government, who do you think gets to keep the higher interest rate that follows? It ain't you or me, we're the ones that get to pay it.

The race committee just about killed it themselves by choosing those "boats." i know a number of sailors who just didn't watch because they couldn't relate to the boats.

Compare that to the couple who took a long cruise. One of their "shore excursions" was to go sailing on one of the older 12 meter boats. BTW has everyone here actually seen the cup they're fighting for? Looks like something from the Museum of Bad Taste!

That's what I thought would happen, but we won today. We're still hanging by a thread, though.

In races won (not points) its now 8 (Nz) to 7 (USA)

Just amazing turnaround by OR from the start of the match.

Re: Why would you blackout the America's Cup live streaming in the US

The race committee didn't choose the boats.

I have met very many people in the US who didn't pay any attention at all to sailing until these boats and this series came to be. I am meeting lots of cruisers the same.

Cruising sailors should have a difficult time relating to these boats - they are not anything like a cruising boat at all. Not to mention, there is absolutely no overlap between the two regarding how weather windows are chosen, how the boats are provisioned, how hard to push the boats, etc.

But the racing has not really been any different than mono racing, except there have been more tactics and maneuvers than in past AC races. Not to mention more speed.

And give the 12 meters a rest - they haven't been part of the cup for over 20yrs. Sure, these current boats are "out there" compared to cruising boats, but the recent past AC boats were also. New production boats can out-sail the old 12 meters - even some cruising models.

As for blacked out live streaming, almost no one has this problem anymore - google proxies, unblockers and anonomizers.

Those boats are soooo fast -- it's amazing how one small error multiplies into hundreds of yards behind. Still, I would have rather seen boats racing that I could see myself sailing on. An amazing display of technology, but too much design for my taste.

US contact sports, to be enjoyed by the public MUST HAVE: Bleeding, broken limbs, gore, concussions, yelling, shouting and acting like wounded swine with rabies. Anything civilized will never make money, hence no reason to broadcast it.
