Re: Why is a Boat Called a She ???
The vessels are referred to as "she" because the paint, sails & rigging costs more than the hull does. Any questions? "Makeup, Clothes & Jewelry."
Of course the Idea that they are built to carry 'seamen' is a good double entendre

Re: Why is a Boat Called a She ???
Captain Ernst Lindemann, the captain of the WWII German battleship Bismarck, referred to his ship as "he", and "suggested" that his crew did was well. He was quoted as saying, "In the future, I would prefer to hear people on board use the masculine form when speaking of the Bismarck. So powerful a ship as this could only be a he, not a she."
Bismarck then went on to have a very short life. Perhaps Poseidon was offended.

Why boats female?
Because they are high-maintenance.

Have you ever seen a bloke move as gracefully as a sailing yacht?

Don't know why. When you get rid of a boat you don't have to pay her, and I've seen many old boats that were still food looking.

Actually yes....quite a few male fencers, figure skaters, and very nearly every male ballet dancer.

I think the term "bloke" has connotations of significant interest in the opposite sex (did I say that with enough political correctness?).

Re: Why is a Boat Called a She ???
Here are a couple of random opinions - I think the sex of the boat was actually determined in the days of the square riggers in the yard, not on the sea. I suspect the shipwrights lavished love and attention on the build and hence would have been (with a few exceptions) reluctant to refer to the evolving masterpiece as a "he". The sex of the boat then stuck with the sailors. In contemporary times, we pat her bottom, paint her up and lavish love and attention on her. Again, with a few exceptions, we are not likely to refer to her as a "he" because of the awkwardness of doing so. These opinions probably have no basis in fact, but that's never stopped me.
