I usually buy a french press from the thrift store (usually only a 2-3$) and cannibalize it for the screen.
Just get one that has a larger screen than your press so you can cut it down to fit. Pick one up whenever you find them so you always have a spare or two

i refuse to use bleach inmy boat-- is dangerous to cat....and boat....hard on the rubber bits in boats and gaskets and such items if importance. they spill while under sail....LOL
Bleach if left standing to evaporate can be harmful to cats, as there is something about it that is intoxicating to them--I have to lock mine in another cabin if I am cleaning with bleach just to keep her from rolling in it. Once rinsed and cleaned off, its ok. The thing to avoid is any cleaner or disinfectant ending in --sol or --ol, as this contains phenol (also called carbolic acid) such as Pinsol or Lysol. Unlike bleach, the phenol is a persistant chemical which can be absorbed through the skin or when a cat washes his paws. It accumulates in the liver and in felines, the liver cannot break down the toxins. This will lead to liver damage and eventual premature death.

Now, back to the topic. Sometimes, if you are using pre-ground coffee from a tin, and you get that skunky smell, try switching brands. As I mentioned a previous post, some purveyors add a chemical closely related to skunk spray and found naturally in coffee beans in small amount. It is supposed to give coffee that aroma people expect of freshly ground coffee. I once had a partner who complained of a skunky smell whenever I was making coffee or had a coffee tin open; I could not smell it, though she could. Some people are just more sensitive to some scents than others.

Did you buy it in Asia??? They intentionally feed coffee beans to skunks for "processing", it costs extra for that.

no. tried swithcing beans, but sometimes get a skunky coffee. "sometimes". and brought to my attention about smells in a boat that cannot find sources too and wondered what the expert homemakers do, since the usual options dont seem to play well on a boat - like baking soda.

Re: Why does my coffee smell like a skunk?

If your coffee is ´made in´Spain, Portugal, Brazil, etc. then it may be robusta as this is what they drink there and they call it coffee;-). We threw our supplies overboard, went to the shop in the next country and got proper arabica, which smells, well - of coffee.

Zee, that's exactly what we're talking about; that's a "burr grinder". MUCH better coffee than a spinning blade grinder.

Good that you got it for cheap, it's possible to pay a lot for what you have there.

Re: Why does my coffee smell like a skunk?

does anyone here roast coffee aboard?

I used to when I lived on land, I had a "Fresh Roast" coffee roaster that worked very similarly to an air popcorn popper. The only downsides were a bit of smoke - not a crazy amount, nothing the stove vent couldn't handle, but more than I'd be willing to have in the cabin of my boat.

I've heard of people having some success roasting beans on a cookie tray in an oven. I wonder if I could build something using a propane burner and a hand-cranked agitator to get a more uniform roast... hmm.

I would love to pick up twenty pounds or so of these green coffee beans and store them in an airtight drum in a bilge somewhere - fresh roasted coffee on an atoll in the south pacific sounds pretty much like heaven to me.
