You caught that too. Led lighting in the 1700.
Imagine that.
I have one LED on the mizzen, two on the main mast spreaders.
Switching is independent, depending on the need.
Lite only the cockpit, either side of the main mast, or all three.
They should not be megabright LEDs.

Y’all remember that this is a yawl. That little mizzenmast is sternly planted at the stern. It would be delighted to have some light but to avoid hobby-horsing it should be kept light. Mainly, the lightning goes to the main.

During Napoleonic times, on Her Majesty’s ketch rigged line of battle ships, the main mast was the one festooned with LED lighting. This had most to do with the desire to limit cable runs from the ship’s house batteries. A carry over from lead acid battery days, the sulphuric acid venting batteries would be kept in the foc’sle, as far away as possible from the officers quarters in the aft of the ship.
By not lighting the mizzen, the intrepid sailors also did not blind the helmsman with excess light during night maneuvers. Directly lighting up the helm will result in loss of night vision.

Since it is difficult to locate a light on the back of the mizzen mast without getting in the way of the sail, I mounted two LED lights on the mizzen spreaders and one facing forward on the main mast. Works well. Lights up the whole deck.

Re: Which mast do spreader lights go on?
I have taken to having a "miner's light" in the cockpit at night. This straps around your head, is battery powered, and has a pretty strong beam generated by a bunch of LED lights. This aims the light right where you want to look but keeps your hands free.
I love it.
You can get various makes and models.
Amazon has a wide selection from around $10 and up....don't leave the dock without one !!!

Re: Which mast do spreader lights go on?
I use switchable LED’s on both spreaders. They are blue for night vision or white for docking and high visibility needs. The mounts allow a swivel for proper coverage fore and or aft.
I had a dimmable high cost set on my 38’ sloop but went with non-dimmable for my ketch rig and love them as do many of my neighbors.
Coupled with the cockpit blues makes me the “blue light special.”

Yes, and no doubt they had a hybrid system that included high power electric propulsion. It is well documented that their solar panels could provide all the power they needed during battle maneuvers!

I have these stuck to the bottom of my spreaders. 5 years and still working.

Re: Which mast do spreader lights go on?
Your lights are for your pleasure, so to speak. They go where you want them. If I had two masts, I would have spreader light on both masts.
They light up your deck for any reason whenever you want some light. They put light on your sails when you want to be visable at night.
A foredeck light will do the same for your foredeck and your headsail.

I wouldn't mount on aft of the mizzen mast, as it would be some what limited in its effectiveness by the sail.
I mounted one on the port spreader pointing down Into the cockpit on spreader for the Mizzen Mast. Plenty of illumination, in the cockpit.
Main mast has independent LEDs switched on separately, port and starboard.
Because of the shadow at night from the mainsail.

Lites cause "hobbyhorseing"?
How big is that lite?

Uh, the Napoleonic Wars were 1803-1815, not 1700.

Okay I get it, Humorous
As far as subject matter.. I don't know anyone that sails at night with deck and cockpit Lites on. Maybe a period of time only.
These are Lites for deck work, not that bright, or shouldn't be that bright.

In a perfect world, I’d go for lights on both masts, separately switched. And hi/low depending on need. Efficient electronic dimmers are available to implement the hi/low option.
