With only a year (I know that may sound like a lot of time now but in cruising terms it is not), my 2c would be start on the E coast or FL and cruise the Keys and the Bahamas. Dont get caught up in getting to a specific destination, just enjoy the venues w no schedule. Work your way further south if time, and hurricane season, permit.

And, schedule your boat prep time starting well before your cruise time...ideally at least another year before so you have time to prep the boat, learn the boat, and build some experience too...obviously doing this part close to home would be easier. This prep time will make the experience more enjoyable, and safer, for you and your family. BTW: this prep time is going to chew through a lot of time and money.

Re: Where Would you Sail if you had a Year to Sail, no More?

I would go to the Time Store, and get more time.

If that didn't work, I'd go to the Rules Administration, and change the rules so I had more time.

If neither of those worked, I'd quit, bail, walk out and go to sea.

Re: Where Would you Sail if you had a Year to Sail, no More?

Lots of things can be done on and with boats - the question is usually whether it wise or fun (for "you")........whilst going down the west coast does sound very interesting, to my mind the big attraction of the Caribbean is that whilst you can be ambitious on miles and dates, you aren't stuck with that schedule - and conversely can also decide to be more ambitious on places visited, at any time......but likely you will find that a large chunk of the fun is being places for a while (get to know way around and to know folks, locals and other cruisers) rather than simply the passage making (it's own fun - but different).

Boats is all about choices - your own!

I've always wanted to do the St. Lawrence out of the great lakes and sail South through the Panama canal and up to Alaska. It should be doable comfortably in a year.

Wow, ancient thread revival. But great plan GL. I sorta have the same plan. I left Thunder Bay in 2014. Made it to Newfoundland in 2017. I figure at my pace I should make it to Vancouver by 2027, but that might be pushing it.
