Re: Where would you go live to learn to sail?

If you wanted to learn to ride a bike, would you take a bunch of lessons, or would you buy a bike and ask someone to show you how, and then start doing i?

Hoorah for dinghy sailing! There is a real reason dink sailers say, “Dinghy sailers are the best!” I’ve skippered schooners over 80ft and still rely on what I learned on a 14ft dink: sail the boat right or go swimming!

Well, if you lived on a boat, you wouldn't need to worry about housing.

(And in California you don't have the hard water problems we have here in Minnesota )

Re: Where would you go live to learn to sail?

Okay... update time:

Given the craziness that was 2020 (just a few months after I posted this) we actually moved to a different landlocked area close to family. With COVID lockdowns and apparent/potential race riots we didn't think moving across the country to a coast, or across an ocean, was such a bright idea. So we bought a home near family in a small town in the Rockies in July 2020.

But I haven't given up the dream of sailing. I had a neighbor from the previous residence ask me on the day I was moving out if I'd be interested in a free sailboat in his backyard. Why he waiting until I was moving??? no idea.

Given the responses I got on here, and my having not moved to a coastal area, I'm hoping to pick it up this spring and just figure out how to sail it on a few of the small lakes/reservoirs near me. I guess the worst that can happen is I sink a free boat...

Now my question is, if I learn to sail... decide I really love it as much as I WANT to love it, what is my next step??

I think I'll make a new post about that though...

Thanks for all the great input and thoughts btw... I don't even own a boat and think the sailing community is awesome!
