Where to reupholster

Hi all,
Didn't know where to post this so it ended up here.
My wife wants to get our boats cushions redone.
Does any one have info for her.
We are on the Carib side of Central America now and will be heading back through the canal around Jan next year, heading back to Pacific Mexico.

Thanks
Dave & Mary

Its been more than a decade, but we had some good and inexpensive canvas/sunbrella and I vaguely recall upholstrey work done in the Rio Dulce.

Re: Where to reupholster

Here's a lesson we learned the hard way. We went to a well-respected local upholstery shop. The proprietor does some fantastic work restoring antique furniture, and charges top dollar. He was happy to take our project (and money) and did some pretty nice-looking work.

But it's no more comfortable as the old cushions we replaced.

As we discovered, you want someone who understands not only the marine environment (selection of foam and fabrics) but also how to make something you're comfortable lounging around on. It's a different skill set from restoring a trophy piece that's only for looks!

If you call either Marina Coral or Baja Navel in Ensenada, MX, that could give you the name of a guy who I believe is still around and doing fine work at reasonable prices. We had our entire boat done, including the headliner for less than $1000. She was a Transpacific 49 so not a small job. His wife and daughter also help in the business.

I'm currently recovering my entire boat with $74 dollars worth of canvas fabric from fabric.com If you or your wife know how to work a sewing machine even in the least, it may save you lots of money to do your own.

There are quite a few upholstrey shops on the Rio now. It looks like they really jump on a project.
