Where and When ?
I am planning a southern holiday ( on a sailboat of course), I really want to get it right for my wife; when is the best time for the caribean or bahamas. Those of you who are married kinda get it. And if you aren't you can take a hint from this post I need to make a great impression the first time. Don't get me too wrong, she likes the water. We've been out in friends sailboats and my power boat. But, I want to make it so nice that there will be another trip. And if I'm lucky, that "boat" that we live in will come.
I hope I get lots of response, all different views will guide me to larger grasp of what to do. Oh, of course she likes shopping, scuba diving and most important eating.
Cheers,
Wayne

Re: Where and When ?
Grab a bareboat in St. Martin, sail over to St. Barts. Great beaches, snorkling, restaurants and shopping. Pricey, but it will make a good impression.

Re: Where and When ?
I would take her for a charter to the BVI. There are lots of nice places to sail to with only a few hours of sailing to arrive at the next great destination. If you can't enjoy the British Virgin Islands, then there may be no hope for a full time sailing lifestyle.
I lived in the Caribbean for five years, and I enjoyed sailing year around. The problem with chartering in the summer is that you may pick charter dates that coincide with a tropical storm or hurricane. If I was going to charter during hurricane season, I would get trip cancellation insurance for sure.

Well, for shopping and eating you don't want the Bahamas, you want the Caribbean. And the easiest and most enjoyable area is the Virgin Islands.
For Scuba diving I would suggest the out islands of the Bahamas or the Grenadines in the Caribbean.
Overall, I would suggest the Caribbean because as "Meatloaf" sings "Two Out of Three, Ain't Bad."

Re: Where and When ?
Been Married. Now divorced. I kept the boat. However...
I wouldn't over canvas, unless she wants to try more sail. In other words- nothing scary!
It would be better to just plod along until she is comfortable with "you" as a skipper. Even better, make her as involved as possible - if she want to be that is. Ask her advice on things- get her involved in Nav etc. Involve her in passage planning. Booking the charter co.
Basically, Use the skills she has and don't put her through a guelling Fastnet race of a cruise, unless she says she wants it that way.
This is all common sense when "woman whispering" anyway. But make it about "her" trip and not yours. :-) good luck and have a great time..

Re: Where and When ?
Thanks Oz,
Those are all great comments. I know I can loose myself in the moment and miss the signals. Then there isn't much whispering anymore.

Re: Where and When ?
What I suggest you need to think about is what is your objective - cruising? or sailing?
It sounds like your wife might be more into "cruising" which is merely using a sailboat as a very enjoyable way to get from one great place to explore, dive, eat to another different place to do the same.
If your desire is to enjoy the "sailing" - the feel and excitement of getting the sailboat to response to your skills, and - the destination is not all that important - then there will be a conflict between the two of you.
However, being a bit crafty, you can have your "cake and eat it too" - in that places like the Virgin Islands and Grenadines have superb "destinations" and also some great sailing between them. The key is to avoid long duration passages until she is "hooked" on all the great places for her to enjoy that can be reached by sailing.

Re: Where and When ?
Thanks Osiris and Boatman.
Fortunately for me I only have to be on the water and I'm in heaven.
I am also more about being there than getting there. However; I enjoy letting out the sheets, given the company and wheather. As far as response to my skills that has yet to be seen.

Re: Where and When ?
For the esperience of sailing and cruising I vote get a boat in Nassau and go down the Exuma chain. However, if you want restaurants etc, then that is not a good choice. Maybe St Martin, Antigua, or Martinique.

Re: Where and When ?
For my two cents...The BVI offers lots of wind in the lee of islands on mostly beam reaches to the next spot. A lot of variety, line of sight navigation good shopping etc.
You might want to hire a skipper for a couple of day sails so you can focus on your wife's comfort til she gets the hang of it.
