are there harbors along the way that you can like rent for the day? do you have to sort of plan ahead like getting a hotel, or there generally a slip avaialble for short time?

Well, many folks just anchor for a day or two or more.
Others go from marina to marina and in most cases ya should make a reservation.

Fee range from (For my 33' sailboat) from $23.00 per night to $100.00 per night or more....Depending on how fancy the marina is.
That usually includes showers and toilets, as well as dock side water, but electricity is usually extra....Some marinas have cable TV and phone hook-ups as well.

I prefer the anchor thing however...One gets on a boat to get away from it all.

i understand anchoring, but if you want to go on land dont you kind of have to deal with the marina?

Yes, people steal yer dink now and then.

Don't buy a fancy one.

Ya carry the dink on deck or on davits in the back.

It is really no big deal...Just a natural part of sailing: Use yer tender to get ashore.
Some marinas charge $5.00 per day for dink dockage: Then ya ancor out and still have some security for the dink.

fugi: What size boat are you going to cruise in and where are you going to sail?
We just returned from a cruise down to Panama and we pulled our dink most of the time. But when we crossed an area that is not protected we put on board.
We had davits on the stern but took them off and now use an inflatable with folding floor boards. Works well for us. We have a stern winch to haul the ob and attached it to our stern railing. we purchase one of the new inflatables that the pressure to inflate is 13.5 psi. gives a great ride and planes easily. The reason we did this is that the old dink was only 10 ft and the new one is 14. I built a water proof box to sto the dink when not in use and in the same box I installed a large gas air compressor and it fills the dink in about 10 min.
Also, the question about what to do when sailing do you stay in the marinas or anchoar is just a matter of economics and availblility. If you can afford to stay at a marina every night there are guest slips available most of the time. But if you go to a popular crusing area it is best to call ahead for a slip. But it's more fun to moore or anchore out. But the real fun is to just go and improvise to the surroundings. Know what's in front of you and go. If you get a slip great if you dont find a place to moore or anchor and have fun.
