What's the market like?

Does anyone have any insight into the state of the secondary sailboat market? Is it still hot like it was during the height of Covid? My cousin is thinking of buying a sailboat in the class of an 2000's Oyster 46 or newer Hylas 46.

Re: What's the market like?

Brokers I spoke with in May or June told me they usually had thirty or forty boats listed for sale each spring. This year they only had two or three left. Everything else had been sold. We looked for J/120's and there were three listed on YachtWorld. One in Mexico, one in San Diego, and one in Portugal, IIRC, none of them in good shape. At this point there may be some people who are getting out of sailing adding to the inventory pool, but even if the market has cooled (almost everyone who wants a boat has bought one?) there are not huge numbers of used boats for sale right now.

I think it's still pretty hot. I sold my boat in five days for full price. I had multiple offers from people who hadn't even seen her in person.

Of course, that just made my wife say I priced her too low. She's always right, of course.

Market is still strong in most segments. 250K and down in sail especially. We’ve seen little slowdown since May 2020. Some listings contracting before they hit the market. Same for Power especially Trawlers.

Re: What's the market like?

IMO ~ we will see some seasonal and inflation driven adjustments. 🤔. Not much at the price point you mentioned but certainly under the $100K market. The best canary I think of ATM would be the high end used luxury vehicles. If there is a substantial drop in that market it might carryover to boats.otherwise get out the superstition of your choice

Re: What's the market like?

My track record would predict that the market will continue to go up.

Whenever I buy a stock, it goes down. I sold my boat because I thought that next year might not be as good a market as right now. Ergo - the boat market will continue to be hot.

Re: What's the market like?

My friends have just sold an Oyster this size. It was about 3 weeks on the market.

If a boat is good and priced right, it sells very soon.

If a boat is (----) and priced too high, it never sells.

Market imho remains hot. The COVID effect will run to about 2023 in my view.

I wish I could say you are wrong, but you are likely right.

Can't Imagine buying a sailboat without seeing it...feeling it. I've lost maybe 8 potential buys to this current phenomenon. While I'm asking questions and planning a trip to see it...SOLD! "they havent even seen it!"

Re: What's the market like?

I have seen a few of those "sight unseen" deals fall apart. Usually there's a survey & some contingencies to allow a buyer to bail out. I think in this hot market serious buyers are going ahead and putting a deposit on anything that looks good to take it off the market. Then they can come down and take a look and bail if it's not what they thought & they think they can do better. Just a hypothesis based on a couple of brokers calling me back on boats that were almost immediately under contract.

Re: What's the market like?

Most brokers round here are doing extensive video surveys and clients are putting down deposits on the back of that. I suspect with easing travel restrictions , fewer of these are actually occurring
