Animal Planet had them on program called "Top 10 Fastest Animals". The claw the cock and then trip, snaps shut so fast that it creates a little shock wave they use to stun prey...and thats what makes rhe popping sound.

Always knew them as snapping shrimp but the polyester lemnoria is a more likely suspect. Barnacles and mussels are known to be mute.

Ha! Thanks. Yes, was driving me crazy, too. Sounded to me like burning electrical wire, or microwave popcorn kind of. Bilges dry, batteries ok. Started to relax when could hear it throughout the marina.

Likely fish and things.
If in Florida (not sure of their range along the coast/gulf) you are likely hearing sheepshead eating your barnacles. Almost guaranteed.
Clean your bottom and the crackling will stop.

Thanks. Was pressure washed almost 3 wks ago, and heard the noise all over the marina. Maybe it was those Asian basketball sized jellyfish that are showing up lately.
