We hang our wet foulies in the forward shower, which is a stand-alone shower. Thank goodness we don't have to hang oilskins in there.

It would be rather hilarious though to show up for a wet sail in oilskins. Smear that oil all over people's boats, stink the place up, look like you're from 200 years ago.

I can think of just a few things that would make me give up sailing.

1. Loss of all four limbs

I think I'd give up a cruising boat if I could get a big Nordhavn handed to me (and someone else paid for the boat, maintenance, and fuel) and I could carry a small sailboat with me like a laser. That would be pretty sweet, at least for a while.

That's exactly the problem I have with sailing. I do not understand why I like it. The cruising life is fundamentally difficult, expensive, impractical, and uncomfortable.

Is there some emptiness in my life, a feeling of unease that the modern world is just too easy, the hedonism at a suburban strip mall too satisfying, and this begets an odd compulsion to make life more difficult, less predictable, for an illusion that a life at sea is more vivid, and thus a more worthy way to spend one's limited time on Earth?

So we spend more money and time and talk about technology here to make our lives in that vast expanse more comfortable and safe. But we know that if it gets too easy, and too predictable, like those on the hypothetical megayacht, the illusion will evaporate and we may as well just fly.

So... why do people choose to stop? I think that's what the gentleman who posted here was asking, maybe because he is thinking of choosing to stop. I also want to know this, because then maybe I will get some insight into why someone would choose to start.
