What item could I buy now that would serve for my future sailing boat?
I want to buy something, that would be long lasting, an investment that would serve to a better life on the ocean. Something that would be useful.
It could range from food utensils to sailing equipment. The thing is , I dont have a sailing boat yet but I will and all the things I can think of are camping like equipment. There must be some kind of tool that every sailor likes and that it will be useful in the future. Thanks a lot!

Without knowing where you are, I will add ASA from a GOOD school. Ideally pay for a small 2 person class so you get 100% of the teachers attention.

Buy a half gallon of milk in a plastic jug. Drink milk. Screw cap on. Cut bottom out of jug. You now have a dinghy bailer.

Electronics age quickly and are thus not on the list. weather gear">Foul weather gear has new products every year, but you can be comfortable in 20 years old clothing. Other items on the list, binoculars, bearing compass, rulers. etc

Stuff that you can use now but that is still useful on a boat:
Leatherman multitool
waterproof torch
Splicing fids
Book of knots / splices
Sangean ATS909 short wave receiver (or whatever newer model exists)
waterproof smartphone with Navionics app
solar powered Powerbank
Okulele

A sextant
A pressure cooker
A good pair of binoculars with a compass
These are my most treasured boat posessions

Invest in you and your skills. That investment will last a lifetime. The interest it pays back over a lifetime compounds exponentially.
Sailing Skills
Knot tying
Splicing
First aid (Wilderness First Responder would be better)
Navigation Skills
Scuba certification
Diesel repair
Sewing & sail repair
Learn a language

Very good idea. Add Nigel Calder's Boatowners Manual for Mechanical and Electrical Systems. Do a search here for BOOKS and find more.

Re: What item could I buy now that would serve for my future sailing boat?
With no apparent rush to purchases, you have an excellent opportunity to buy what you need by lowballing ebay auctions. Even if you get 1 in 10, your cost to outfit will be substantially lower than buying at retail. A friend of mine just got a manual windlass of Ebay for $100.

- If you're in the US, I'd say ASA courses. 101-103 at least.
- A short piece of rope so you can use YouTube to learn your knots.
- A subscription to Good Old Boat and Practical Sailor. You'll learn a lot from those mags.
