Re: What is Your DREAM Sailing Destination?

If that is the Lockheed that crashed in the 80s, I met the pilot in the Aliwai Harbor in the early 90s. He lived on a boat and flew for a local airline. He said it was so overloaded that he had to abort the takeoff and ended up going off of the end of the runway. Small world!____Grant.

Re: What is Your DREAM Sailing Destination?

Since I've sailed for 2 years along the BC coast I voted South Pacific.

Although I still have big plans to climb and ski big mountain pow along the BC/Alaskan coast, using the boat as a base camp.

I have some South Pacific surfing to do first though...

Re: What is Your DREAM Sailing Destination?

Aside from doing the polar route, my other destination of choice would be Japan perhaps.

Indeed Astrid! WoW! Clever girl and well read!
Sent to a few of my Aircraft Carrier Pilots buddies who recognized it quickly

It's a Lockheed 18 "Lodestar" with what appears to be Learstar mods

That would be Lockheed 18 Lodestar N163R - http://www.airport-data.com/aircraft/N163R.html

Re: What is Your DREAM Sailing Destination?

In reading the airsafety net that would not be the plane that I thought it was. The man said it was a takeoff accident and I think he said it was a Lockheed 12, of which there were a few still being used 20 or so years ago. So much for the old memory.____Grant.

North west Madagascar! Flat seas as it is in the lee of the island and the winds are predominantly land/sea, so usually on the beam at 15 knots. Area is very beautiful, great beaches, great French food and unbelievably cheap. I miss it so! Sigh.

The old classic Kennedy-era sailing areas. History, beauty, mansions on the water, seafood, gentle summer nights with Chinese paper lanterns hanging in white gazebos on the shore, reflecting off the water. You'd sail up the Mystic River and when you passed the Charles W. Morgan for a second you could imagine what it felt like to sail in Herman Melville's time. Now where's my navy blue, double breasted blazer and white pants?

I could never live there now though (my mother still does) -- the population density and taxes and cost of living is so high it's intolerable and insane, but I sure did love it when I was young and I wasn't working and paying to maintain a household -- just my sailboat.
I lived many years on the North Shore of Long Island (Northport). I know exactly what you are talking about, great cruising ground. You are also right about the population and taxes. However, my short term goal is to sail the Caribbean and Cuba...

Cold weather is a bitch...

Re: What is Your DREAM Sailing Destination?

I want to go back and sail Port Moresby harbor where I learned to sail and spent most of my childhood.

My best memories - the whale shark longer than our boat, eating oysters off the rocks on Local Island, sailing in the doldrums, swimming in crystal clear warm tropical water, scuba diving on WWII wrecks, painting the boat with my school friends and the extended Kalau clan and, of course, coming third from last but still winning (on handicap) the Papua Royal Yacht Club diamond jubilee yacht race with my Dad and Len.

Port Moresby now pretty much off-limits due to crime and general anarchy but I hope it will be safe enough to take my family back there one day.
