What is this?

This was on board my boat when I bought it. None of my very experienced sailing friends can identify it. Not even sure if it's boat related.

Looks to me like one half of an interlocking puzzle.

It’s used to attach a temporary dock line on a wooden dock that has gaps between the boards wide enough for it to fit through.

Very common with serious snowboarders.

Maybe that's it. Are you guessing or have you seen this before? Doesn't look quite right for attaching a dock line.

He's not guessing, I knew what it was 50 years ago but it only looked "familiar" today until Training Wheels identified it. Here's a similar one available today

My sailmaker provides one with every sail. A piece of luff tape you can run up/down the furler. Halyard on one end, tag line on the other. Use it to check smooth running at the joints. If you leave your furler empty it can vibrate/oscillate a lot. Third string to the smaller grommet can be used to tie off to cleat/mast and reduce movement of the empty furler.

Do not know, could guess it to be anything from a tool to tension sail battens to a tack pennant for a headsail.
