What is the ideal sailboat for ocean cruising?
If you wanted a boat for sailing to far away exotic places - what would be the ideal in terms of length, displacement, beam?

Re: What is the ideal sailboat for ocean cruising?
my boat i have suits me just fine.
i sailed a lot of boats before this one. this is perfect for me. every one has a different idea of perfect boat.. sailing it is part of the selection as each boat sails different from the others.

Sorry, not going to play. The boat you can afford and can be sure is seaworthy because you have made her so is the real answer. A fantastic boat will not make a fantastic sailor of someone with no experience especially if s/he lacks the gumption to jump in and learn to sail first.

IDEAL? As in no compromise? 100+ feet with a crew of 12.

Hiya JH! My boat recommendation to you for sailing the seven seas is: Beneteau Oceanis 38. Aim for one around 5 years old. Look up Beneteau's website and drool away! Let's us know how your search is coming. Good luck! (Disclaimer: Not affiliated with Beneteau in any capacity.)

I live on her. She just fits me. The ideal boat fits like that shirt or sweater that never gets thrown out no matter how thread bare.

Re: What is the ideal sailboat for ocean cruising?
Ann Cate is spot on. I'll say: there is no ideal. Most importantly, even with unlimited resources: EVERY boat is a compromise. Anyone who claims an "ideal" boat is naive or... well, I'll just stop there.
We wrote recently about a type of boat that's not normally considered for distance cruising, but is a really worth option:

Hasn't this topic been covered more times than the Republicans have tried to abolish ACA?

Re: What is the ideal sailboat for ocean cruising?
Sailboat? No, something big enough (900-plus feet in length) to have a large party, with people to change your bed, makes you meals, and serve you drinks, and with lots of hot water for lengthy showers. It's best to "charter" (book a cruise) when crossing oceans. And it's the least expensive way to do it.
