what is the furthest North record?

hello,

does anyone know what the record is for furthest north in a sailing vessel?

I am trying to do a little research for a potential expedition and attempt. I have found lots of information about speed records and races but almost nothing about going North.

What i have found about the 'official record' i know to be incorrect. I know a handful of yachts have circumnavigated Svalbard which by my reckoning means they have gone to at least 80 degrees North.

Re: what is the furthest North record?

In the last decade - there have been many who have tried or actually circumnavigated around the north pole via the northeast passage/berling straight. As the ice continues to erode - almost certain that more will get further north.

Colin Archer designed and build Fram for Fridtjof Nansen and crew to try to reach the North Pole. Got Close but missed some..

That's how far they got on skis after leaving the Fram.

Supposedly, Fram actually got to 85°57'N while trapped in ice and drifting for the better part of three years.

But how far north they actually sailed is a moot point, probably not much north of Spitzbergen , maybe about 82°

Another way of putting it could be: What is the furthest North a sailing boat has sailed AND has come back, sailing?

Yeah, good point!

There seems to be a lot of misinformation going around online as to the record... I guess no-one overly cares.....

I love the story of the Fram, I read a great article about it in National Geographic a few years ago.

Re: what is the furthest North record?

Every summer there are 'normal' sailing yachts in Spitsbergen.

Re: what is the furthest North record?

Probably these two French are the guys that have been more to the North on a sailboat (without engine).

They made the Northwest passage on a sailboat without engine and they planned to cross the Arctic from one side to another passing by the North pole!!!

Difficult to find more crazy than that They had not managed and were "saved" way North by a big Russian ice breaker. I don't know how North they were but i guess plenty.

Their boat was not only designed to sail on the water but also to sail on ice.

Will this count??

If you are planning an expedition, you may be interested in this book, which is a modern trip north on a yacht:

Its also a pretty good read.

Re: what is the furthest North record?

Don't remember how far north he got but Tristan Jones wrote about a trip north in a book called "Ice".

And of course, everything he wrote was absolutely factual

Re: what is the furthest North record?

I checked and found that Roger Taylor sailed Mingming to 80N in 2011 & 79N in 2014.
Tristan Jones' "Ice" has been debunked - see Anthoy Dalton's book "Wayward Sailor: In Search of the Real Tristan Jones"
