What is the best blue water cruiser?

There are lots of strong contenders and I'd love to know your thoughts?

For a long time now I have dreamed of taking a Rustler 42 on a long ocean cruise... Maybe all the way round the world! Definitely in my top 5 blue water cruisers that I've ever sailed.

You can imagine how happy we were then to take this beauty on a 1700 NM trip from the Med to the UK:

Re: What is the best blue water cruiser?

So what's your aim in sailing? Is it to do passages all the time or is it to enjoy the boat at anchor (90+% of the time)?

If it's the latter then I wouldn't touch a boat like this. No easy access to/from the water or a tender makes it a pain in the ass from my perspective. Add in that small cramped cockpit and you really starting to limit your at anchor enjoyment.

Now they are nice boats, well built and great on passages but limiting in so many other ways.
No thanks.

I don't think HRH really does dinghies certainly not the last time we met, Luncheon in the Mess was much more civilised

exactly , evaluate what you want from the boat 80% of the time, focus on those attributes , dont buy a boat for features that you rarely will use or actually want

I have never run a Rustler, but did move a few Hallberg-Rassy boats. We were in soon very big seas and she took them in stride, bearing making a noise. Add to that the owner’s (delivery Capt) stateroom aft, and they are sweet. Only ding for us tall guys is the 6’ headroom.

Re: What is the best blue water cruiser?

Couple of years ago a friend of mine decided to get a boat. He was very set in his ways, knew what HE wanted and ended up with something between a Rustler and a Hans Christian. I knew it was a silly decision but he wouldn't listed. Took it down from the UK to Greece and his family joined him for a month.

That was the last time they spent their holidays on the boat. After the first trip they said next time can we charter something like that pointing at some other boats that had more deck space for sunbathing, that had a swim platform or felt less like a cave down below. In other words the boats that really worked well in the med.

Unless you are sailing on your own then you need to think how the other 60% of your family will want to use the boat, what they need to make them happy, how the boat will be used 90% of the time. Then choose the boat.

If you just go with what works for just you, you may find yourself solo sailing a lot of the time.

I think there has to be focus also on the 10% that you dream of doing but quite probably never will

Re: What is the best blue water cruiser?

I would say most world cruisers would say it is their boat :-)

For us it is an Antares 44i

Absolutely , makes perfect sense to purchase and spec a boat for things you’ll never likely do. In fact the whole boat market depends on that fact !!!!

Re: What is the best blue water cruiser?

If 80% of time is spent at anchor, and that’s an 80% selection weight, then you should pick a houseboat. The challenge and reward of cruising is getting there, safely and with confidence. I say put 80% of your selection weight on seaworthiness.
