What is best place online to buy bulk sunbrella?

Hello Cruisers,
I'm looking to buy bulk sunbrella for some upcoming projects. Where have you found the best prices?
Thanks,

https://www.sailmakerssupply.com/
Bought the Sunbrella and vinyl window sheets for my cockpit enclosure there.
If you don't have a walking foot machine, or even if you do, use seamstick tape!

Thanks,
If you're near a major city, the best place to get a deal on fabrics may be at one of the many fabric stores they have. The better ones often have Sunbrella or a competitive product in stock, they have periodic sales, and in many cases they have discontinued products or partial rolls that they will clear out at a substantial discount.

My wife found a great discontinued outdoor upholstery fabric at a deal that we are using to redo all our cushions.

It may be harder to find similar deals on heavier fabric for dodgers etc, but you never know.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll look into both. The sailmakerssuply.com looks to fit the bill perfect.
Cheers,

You can check the SailRite site.

One time, I found a good deal on dark red Sunbrella via e-bay.

Be aware that Sunbrella comes in different weights and types. For example our dodger and bimini are both sunbrella, but the bimini is lighter weight fabric. Look at Sunbrella website to determine the correct fabric choice and make sure when comparison pricing you are comparing apples to apples

Re: What is best place online to buy bulk sunbrella?

There are other mills than Sunbrella who weave up acrylic canvas, too. I bought some German acrylic canvas that was the same weight as the medium Sunbrella, for quite a bit less.

Many options out there.

I've been pretty pleased with Weather Max, but I would not use it for another boom bag, because it has faded a lot faster than Sunbrella. It still weighs half of what Sunbrella does, though, and is easy to work with...with the basting tape, of course.

Not sure where you are located.
I buy from Perfect fit McDonald, $16.75 a yard for the 60 inch wide. I have purchased from both the Seatte and Portland stores.

Just how much material are you looking for? I may be able to help you if it's enough.

Hi Ann,

my machine has arrived :-) its working nicely and is a gem to look at.
Little question who was that manufacturer of the German Sunbrella derivate you mentioned further up here? What's the cloth name?
Is that stuff good for a boom bag, or should I rather use Sunbrella Plus for which I have been offered a price of 21€per running meter @1.5m width?
One more, what is basting tape?

Best regards Fran

Try sailrite website - is quite useful. At boat show times they often have a 10% discount on line.

Re: What is best place online to buy bulk sunbrella?

Franziska,

I'm sorry, I don't know who provided it; I ordered it from a sailmaker who told me that was where it came from. [In Australia, it is mainly sailmakers and marine trimmers one gets acrylic canvases from. Yardage stores order it from them. There are other suppliers, but they don't undercut the prices of the trimmers and sailmakers.]

Basting tape is double sided sticky tape, comes in a variety of widths, from 2- 4 mm to around 25mm. I think the 12 mm is the most generally useful for heavy things that want to slide around, but for weather cloths and cushions, I use the 4 mm. The 2mm is found in yard (meter?) goods stores. The 4 mm and up, I get from the same sources as above; maybe a search on double-stick tape for sailmaking would reveal its proper name. The stuff for lightweight fabrics dissolves in its first washing, but the stuff from sailmakers lasts the life of the sail--similar, but very different. The glue will gum up the needle, so I place it a couple or three mm away from the stitching line, so it holds the fabric stable in relation to itself, but does not clog the needle eye. If you do get it gluey, use a cotton ball with turpentine to remove the glue.

Ann

PS. I never used basting tape sewing clothing, actually, I was a pin baster or hand basted with thread. But I use the other stuff for Sunbrella and Weather max. I think you will be content with your Pfaff, and enjoy using it. Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Ann

I'll second (or third) SailRite. They have 10% off or free shipping a few times a year that make a great deal. SailRite is also actually interested in DIY and try to help sailors save money/effort as much as they can. Very genuine company. They have my repeat business.

Look at Rochford Supply, all manner of fabric and tools here. Also look for their bargain buys, seconds, closeouts etc. I made my sails and more using their quantity discount for even better prices.

@Ann

Thanks so much for another useful answer.
Will get the Sunbrella Plus cloth, basting tape & thread, then from a local source here in Germany.
Can't wait to start the canvas work but will have to built the new dinghy first.
Panels arrived yesterday. Exciting stuff too.

All the best Franziska
