You won't get agreement on these terms at any sailing site.

I will tell you what "bareboat sailing is".

I have been sailing in the B.V.I.'s,many times ..please use this as an example.
Bareboat sailing is when you go to a particular location,in my case it was Tortola,,,and I had proved before I arrived there ,that I was capable of renting one of their boats and proving that they would get the boat back in the same shape or better than when i had taken her.
I had either taken the various courses or otherwise ,i had shown them that I had the skills to charter a boat from them.
When i left the dock for a week or 10 days ,they had no worries ,,,they knew that i was "okay" .In fact , after my first charter, they Told me that I would receive a credit next year if i booked with them .
We all know that was "hogwash" and they simply wanted me to charter again. But I did: and i got extra free days .
Beacuse i had completed my ASA with THEM,they knew that I was qualified`. None the less ,when I arrived for my next 3-4 charters ,they simply said" good to see you ,Mr Clayton .Please go right to your boat,,,everything has been taken care of.
That is what a set of ASA courses can get you.I had sailed for 20 years on one of the largest lakes in the U.S.A
That is what Bareboat sailing is all about ...I never needed a captain ,even for a single day. The company I sailed with has gone out of business ,but I am sure that the Moorings or anyone of the many Charter companies would be happy to see me walk down their docks..
I know its not like being a Coast Guard licensed driver but they did know that when i arrived ,that I was a capable skipper...
What more can one ask ?

In other words, barefoot sailing is chartering a boat without a crew, as opposed to a crewed sailboat charter. Is that right ?

This is the way I used to sail until a couple years ago, when I ended up one night in hospital with a treble fish hook planted in my right foot. (My wife was afraid our fishing tackle might be stolen in the harbour, and she had stored it on the deck without telling me.)
I have bought a pair of Sebago Docksides since then.

Barefoot sailing is a term invented by cruise companies using large sailing vessels. At first these were old sailing vessels converted to carry passengers but as the business matured purpose built sail boats entered the arena. The emphasis is on casual cruising hence the "barefoot" term. On a barefoot cruise you are a passenger but many take part in some of the sailing activities. A bareboat charter is completely different, you charter the vessel and am in charge of the vessel. Funny enough this term comes from the commercial marine trade where a company would charter a bare boat, no crew, no supplies, no nothing, just the boat. This is very common in the marine business. One company would own the boat and another would charter it bare and run it.

I don't know if there is an agreed on definition of coastal cruising but I would say it's sailing within 100 miles of the coast or a landfall.

Passagemaking is generally understood as crossing oceans or large bodies of water.

Re: What Is Barefoot Cruising?

Thought barefoot sailing was used when cruising along the trade winds routes i.e. warm and nice weather (at least in theory)

Re: What Is Barefoot Cruising?

The RYA says:
“A passage is a non-stop voyage from a departure port / safe haven to a destination port / safe haven.”

No requirement for distance or duration.

Agree that most people mean multi-day when they’re talking about passage making.

Don’t agree that it requires crossing oceans.

It’s the result of a packing mistake before you leave.
