I will leave it to others to explain the difference between SV and SY.
(hehehe, because I don't know)
Hi Hankonthewater

SV stands for Sailing Vessel
SY means Sailing Vessel with Ice Cubes on board

Isn't there a lot of nasty black smoke when you BBQ a RIB?

And then there is the guy in Southeast Asia who refers to his boat as H/V for historic vessel. I guess we can call 'em anything we want to.

When things aren't going so well:

"IT" - Inflated Tyre
"PDT" - Partly Deflated Tyre

The best hope I have until the cash starts to flow again and I can get back up to SV. (Or as I now understand it SY, with Ice Cubes)

Re: What does the s/v in 's/v boatname' mean?

I heard the story years ago in Indonesia that a vessel approached and Indonesia port and radioed the harbour master giving the vessels name as SV xyz. The Indonesians sent out a tug as apparently SV to them denoted a vessel of a size with limited maneuvering capabilities requiring a tug which the Indonesians wanted to charge for.

Acronyms like SV are not universal and best avoided if sailing overseas.
