What do you do?

We visited our boat a fews days ago only to discover someone had collided with us while our boat was in its slip at the marina and mangled our stern railing. I have suspects but no proof, so the $2000 repair is mine.

We're thinking of getting one or two of the trail cameras hunters use to monitor an area for game. Motion activated, IR for night. Just not sure if someone hits us again and knows we have a camera like this if it would end up in the drink.

What do you do? Has anyone tried a camera like this, or have a better solution? (No Wi-Fi available.)

If you use one, how do you secure it so it doesn't 'accidentally' fall overboard?

Re: What do you do?

If your pulpit was mangled there ought to be some evidence on the offenders boat. Confront them if you have solid thoughts about it, maybe insinuate there is a witness. See what they say.

Re: What do you do?

Some one at the marina saw this. Put up a note on the bulletin board, or if they have a web site, do the same.

Game cameras I have only trigger off the heat of an object, not sure a boat would trigger it. Better to get a security camera that records constantly

Re: What do you do?

A lot of game cameras trigger off motion sensors. Plus easy to hook up to solar or 12 volt. You would need to mount somewhere solid and secure, but not in the way of your sails.
It's too bad there isn't wifi available as a lot of cams now will send pics to your phone in real time.
It's a lot of hassle and money to set up, hard to say if it will be worth it.

Re: What do you do?

Trail/game cameras are set up to record animal motion. The quality of the infrared sensor and the sensitivity adjustment determines what will trigger the camera. A large proportion of the pix will be empty scene i.e whatever set off the camera moved out of the coverage area before the camera could react. A surprising number of human predators know they can "dash" a trail cam without being imaged. I have managed to image several scumbags but only by using social engineering to put them off their guard. Furthermore, law enforcement will require an image as good as a mug shot before they will act. What you can do about it will depend on where you live and who you know.

Re: What do you do?

You could even put a fake CCTV camera in a prominent place on your boat. That way they would think they had been filmed and own up (probably).

Let Karma do its thing and let it go ;-) I trust the universe that it will take care of the offender and it always comes through......eventually.

Find out what liability, if any, the marina has.

Re: What do you do?

Unfortunately there are jerks out there that can't handle their boats. Had two stanchions bent from someone sneaking into the slip next to me when it was temporarily vacant. A camera would be the only way to monitor for such damaging actions by another boat.

Does the marina have cameras that cover the scene of the crime?

We've had a few incidents at one of my marinas and the cameras solved most of them. Good luck.

If that doesn't work, I am part Sicilian. Would you like me to make an offer?

I wonder what a tree stand would look like up the mast?
