What are your worst fear sailing events

The events I believe I fear most (in order) are:
1. Death / very severe injury (e.g. broken back, heart attack, stroke, etc.)
2. Sinking (due to collision, fire, grounding, broken hull penetration, swamping, etc,
3. Severe fire
4. Loss of keel
5. Dismasting
6. Loss of rudder

Some of the above, I can foresee how I likely would respond, some not. Some may have legal implications that must be addressed (reporting death, severe injury, environmental impacts, reporting maritime event of high $$$$ consequence).

I realize many events may be exacerbated by multiple failures/weather/ events. These situations compound the confusion and certainly complicate the event response.

I have had two of the above event under conditions that were in reality pretty mundane / under perfect conditions with no complications.

I have been
1. Dismasted
2. Lost of steering under sail due to cable failure inside the binnacle (rudder remained attached).

A clogged marine head in bad weather.
And I am not kidding.

Docking

With a full keel, heavy displacement, barn door rudder boat, I'd rather face a Newfoundland gale out on the briny than dock in windy conditions.

I haven't experienced anything on the rest of your list. Most (2-6) can be minimized by having a sound boat that is reasonably well maintained. Not really something to fear.

If you are afraid of sailing, why are you doing it?

I wouldnt categorize it as fear.

Try to frame it as being prepared for, not scared of.

I may have just finished Master and Commander.

Re: What are your worst fear sailing events

Same as Mike O'Riley above. High windage catamaran docking is horrible.

I've filled with water to float floorboards before and lost steering too. Other boats, not catamaran.

I've had a couple near death experiences in life and drowning wasn't too bad if it helps anyone's fears. You only choke on water for a few seconds. Just like when you have some drink go down the wrong pipe. From there, it's normal, easy breathing and zero pain or even discomfort until your vision goes out. Then there is just nothing.

I was a small child when this happened. Was dragged out of the water and held upside down by my ankles to clear my lungs and get me started again. It was surprisingly peaceful and not any form of suffering at all to drown.

Not afraid of sailing ⛵️ that the easy part 👍. Itís the drowning after the fatigue, sun exposure have had their way with me, 😁

Re: What are your worst fear sailing events

Last Sunday in Maho Beach St John USVI tried to refloat the dinghy and got caught by a ten foot breaker ended up wearing the dinghy on my head while I got slammed on the sandy patch with rocks all around. I am lucky to have my brains in my skull and not all over those rocks. I am pretty much healed by now. I never had anything that serious or scary happen on the big boat.
