I thought that I should make a reply here now that we are back from our first trip, and point out how our weather forcasting went. Although the trip's
route changed it was still a big
learning curve, which will help for our next adventure in two years. Sources I ended up using for coastal cruising were,
Passage weather,
wind finder, magic seaweed, Herb, Chris Parker, and our Grib files by SSB. Of all of them the most ready available was the SSB. The effort of trying to find
internet to get information was not very reliable. Yet our SSB was always there and available. Just to point out Chris Parker and Herb and any other routers could only communicate with us by SSB. We never got a sat phone as after weighing all the pros and cons felt SSB was an easier bet for us. I realize that other people have different thoughts here, but then we went to the class room on this one. The only thing which would have improved this whole thing would have been a reasonable priced
wifi booster which did what it reported. The
wifi we used which cost us about 60 dollars was Alpha 4. It had good range and could connect even when the fellow beside us was using his 500 dollar set up, just guess we were lucky. If you notice I never included Noaa, for if I was to use their forcast would never have left the dock
