Vostok Expedition and Marine Artist Exhibition

Do you know of the Vostok Expedition to Antarctica? Among other achievements, they were able to circumnavigate the continent. 49,723 miles sailed in 751 days. Imagine the excitement and the hardships.

I came upon the vessels Vostok and Mirnyi while browsing a website for marine artists.
In light of recent events, the American Society of Marine Artists have put their 18th National Exhibition on a pdf.

Yes... sadly the record of his voyage was only translated into french many many years later and not sure when into english.

A bit like Vito Dumas but on a grander scale... first translation of his book into english 20 years after his voyage... in the 1960s.. by which time it was yesterday's news.

'Below the Convergence' https://www.amazon.com/Below-Converg.../dp/0393039498 is a good book if you are interested.

Note that when the two German naturalists who were to ship out cancelled at short notice, Capt. Bellingshausen appealed to Sir Joseph Banks for replacements. Sir Joseph who? Oh yes, the one and the same who recommended William Bligh as Master on HMS Bounty.

I just read a brief profile of Vito Dumas. I read he was noted as a profound swimmer. I wonder if he met the great Duke Kahanamoku. Both shared a passion for the water, both were renowned swimmers, their timelines are similar.

And a good choice it was. Lt. Bligh was an accomplished seaman as well as a cartographer of some note. He let 18 men to safety in an open boat over 3,600 nautical miles in 47 days. He was regarded as a capable officer and given command of other vessels after the mutiny. His is one of the great survival stories and probably up there with that of Shackleton.

He has been given a bad deal over history as is often viewed as a tyrant however the reality is that he was a fair officer and often more lenient than the average officer of the day.
