Virginia Sailboat Registration/Display
I've noticed lately that about half the sailboats at the marinas and in the boatyards do not have registration numbers on their boats.
Is a title all that is needed in Virginia for a sailboat?

Re: Virginia Sailboat Registration/Display
Check google, but I would assume this means that boats that are USCG documented don't need state registration in VA.

Re: Virginia Sailboat Registration/Display
Virginia requires registration, even for documented boats.

Re: Virginia Sailboat Registration/Display
Thanks.
I just painted my boat and really didn't want to put the registration number back on the bow.

Re: Virginia Sailboat Registration/Display
The pdf form states that if you are maintaining documentation that there is no requirement to register title in VA!

This is at the top if the registration form (upper right hand block)

Re: Virginia Sailboat Registration/Display
Thanks for the corrections, Steve & Lancelot.
I should have read the form.

Re: Virginia Sailboat Registration/Display
But, to the OP, the point is that--if you don't want to put numbers on the bow--you have to document the boat with the USCG. It has to be one or the other: documented, or registered.
Here in Florida, you have to register with the state even if the boat is USCG documented, but you do not have to display state registration numbers in that case.

Re: Virginia Sailboat Registration/Display
Thom,
Do check the requirements for displaying boat name and hailing port if USCG Documented.

If the boat is not USCG Documented, you must continue to display the registration numbers and decal.
The regulations apply to all boats, not just sailboats.

Re: Virginia Sailboat Registration/Display
Be aware that doc'd boats w/o a state registration can have a dilemma when visiting some other states, e.g., Florida and NY (and maybe others along the east coast). These states require visiting boats to be registered in some state. (I bet this has been discussed on this forum in the past.) There isn't even a grace period - you are immediately illegal. For this reason Va. offers a faux registration for doc'd vessels that doesn't require bow numbers. But this process may create other issues for Va. residents with regard to local personal property taxes....

Re: Virginia Sailboat Registration/Display
My registration is good until 2017 so I will just go ahead and put the numbers back on.
Thanks.

Re: Virginia Sailboat Registration/Display
Be careful of semantics. For a CG Documented boat, they may not call it a "registration" but they still want thier money. It's a gray area and depends on the specific state.
oops, saw that the OP's boat isn't documented, so you need registration and you need the numbers.

I have never heard of this and of course that brings up the question of boats documented in other countries. Many states will not register documented boats.
Please post an authoritative link backing up your post as I'm about to head to FL with a documented but non-registered boat.

You probably got instructions for display of registration numbers with your decals. You may need to get replacement decals.
