Viking Hoard Found in Scotland
One of the most important archeological finds of a buried Viking hoard has been found in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Dumfries, was an old trading center during the Dark Ages and into the Medieval period that is situated about 8 miles inland from the SW coast along a tidal river/estuary. It is certain that there was not only trading but, as most Scots know, Vikings who settled in this area during their voyages as attested by this exciting find. news.stv.tv/scotland/295512-significant-viking-treasure-found...

rognvald,
Thanks for that one. It IS interesting, and will delight the archaeologists. The guy with the metal detector seems like he must be well informed where to look, represents a lot of study.

One of the conquering kings of Norway was Henry Gillis, a relative. Didn't make the lowland Gillis tribe very popular with the rest of the scots however. Maybe that's why I get along with Astrid. We are probably related.

Re: Viking Hoard Found in Scotland
Pretty cool when they find these treasure hordes. 'Significant' Viking treasure found in Dumfries and Galloway | Scotland | News
- What and how did the treasure get buried?
- Who buried the treasure?
- What happened to them?
- Where did the treasure come from?
No way to really know the answers either.
Some tin cans were found recently in California filled with gold coins. The coins were from the 1800s so not as old as the Viking treasure but still danged interesting. The coins where worth quite a bit of money when they were buried and are worth a fortune now. Same questions but no answers!
Later,
Dan

Dan,
Before international banking or the luxury of living in a protected fortress, people buried their valuables to protect them from theft. Throughout Scandinavia and the British Isles, numerous hoards have been found that date to the Viking Era and provide important archeological information about the time they lived. Coins and jewelry from the Middle East, Russia, the Balkans and the Mediterranean give a glimpse into Viking trading and the extent of their travels. It is not difficult to image a Viking chieftain or warrior who buried his valuables before going on a raid and never returning. For us, it is another first hand glimpse at this remarkable period in European History. Good luck and good sailing.

You never know.
All in all, it is a fascinating discovery--something of an ancient time capsule for the modern world to ponder.

Always wondered where Dumfries in the Bahamas (Cat Island IIRC) was named after.

What, no Viking left in you Salty? No thrill every time you enter into a new snow-topped fiord thick with fog and silent as the grave?
These guys may be long dead, but the emotions of their journeys still echo somewhere in my psyche. May they continue to explore forever in Valhalla.

Re: Viking Hoard Found in Scotland
For those interested in the genetics of Great Britain and Ireland, read Oxford geneticist/archeologist Brian Sykes "Blood of the Isles," 2006. Sykes is a prolific and engaging author dealing with discovering our true roots. Also, "Saxons, Vikings and Celts," 2007. If you want to trace your patrilineal/matrilineal roots, you can send your sample to Oxford for complete analysis. You might be surprised with the results as was a native White English Nationalist who had African DNA as a result of an early ancestor who came to Britain during the Roman occupation. Maybe that's how you Brits learned to break dance! Good luck and good ancestry.
