Video on orca attacks
This video on Youtube will give some idea of the scale of orca attacks.
There are a number of threads addressing the situation but none have actuall solutions. It is important that people are kept aware so that something can be done long term.

Re: Video on orca attacks
I stopped counting at 12.
Over a dozen people killed. Many of the bodies never found.
Fishing boats, research boats, kayaks, sail boats, luxury motorboats.
Grew up in part in Alaska. Orca scare me more than sharks.
It’s not just boats anymore. People are dying.

Re: Video on orca attacks
I am a little disappointed that this is being posted by a moderator (or at all). That thumbnail is absurd and this video does nothing but demonize the whales. It has nothing constructive to say about the problem or what might be done to mediate the problem.
I am not the preverbal "tree hugger" type but we must keep in mind that we are in their territory and actively working hard to destroy it also. The fact they are defending it should not be a surprise.
The attitude that humans can go anywhere and remove/change anything that we don't like or we deem is in our way is sad. Even more sad is when we do it only for the financial gain.
The one thing that most of the sailing community seems to agree on at some level is the conservation of our waters. This video IMO does the opposite and doesn't have a place on sites like this because it doesn't (I hope) represent the majority of those that participate on the site.
Rant over.

Re: Video on orca attacks
It's really just a bunch of B Roll and a voiceover of a narrator accounting examples of attacks. Not really any real footage.

Re: Video on orca attacks
Valid criticisms of the video, I felt the same… but this is not addressing the content, no matter how ugly, people are being killed.
Open discussion of people being killed is needed. I’ve been loosely following these threads and this was first time I heard people are being killed.
I thought it was just property damage.
No evidence they are eating, but that is little solace. Dead is dead.

Re: Video on orca attacks
Misguided, and misguiding, use of AI graphics.
Given some 2 billion pigs slaughtered each year by humans (in the most brutal way imaginable) I think if orcas take 12, or 12 million, humans then that's still not square.
I will not post a pig slaughter video here, not even an AI curated one, out of due respect for pigs, and humans.

Humans are not the same as pigs. Disgusting that you would use such.
This is a valid danger that needs to be addressed.

Re: Video on orca attacks
That video is a great example of everything that is wrong with YouTube videos these days.
As for the core question about orcas, that's been argued here enough already. I have my opinions, which are somewhere between what's been posted here on both extremes.

Re: Video on orca attacks
Has there been discussion of people being killed?
I’ve only very loosely followed these threads.
I never heard a hint that anyone had been killed let alone 12-20 listed in that video.
Agree video is bad.

I sincerely hope the sarcasm font it missing. If not, please post some links to credible reports for any of the attacks mentioned in the video. Would love to be pointed to just one credible report of death of a human by wild orca, or even as a result of the orca ramming boats.

They list the incidents.
Feel free to prove they didn’t happen.

Re: Video on orca attacks
And this is a problem how?
Humans kill and capture sea life in vast numbers. And occasionally, sea life hurts or kills humans. Nothing unique about orcas in that regard and the number of instances is few.
Orcas and humans are both mammals and mammals tend to kill one another.
The sea is the orcas home. Even Sea World's captive orcas go rogue on occasion and hurt or kill their keepers.
The phrase, Going to need a bigger boat. comes to mind.

The corollary is for you to prove they did happen. This will be difficult for either side as there is insufficient data provided in that video to even look anything up.
To date, there is no recorded incident where wild orcas have killed humans.
Since the claims this video makes are unsupported by any other data, anywhere, my conclusion is that it is purely sensationalism.
