It’s not just volume but also selective hearing. I am impressed by delivery skippers who are constantly on new boats - even after almost 3 years I’m still hearing new sounds. The various alarm tones will cut through my sleep as I recognise and prioritise them when I hear them (subconsciously I assume when sleeping).
On many devices, most especially Raymarine, full volume is not loud enough. DSC alarms including 2182 are an exception. Most networks do have terminals for an external sounder which I recommend.

Delivery skippers can hear a pin drop. *grin* Literally. We lost a pin from the outhaul shackle on one trip. I heard it hit the deck - woke me up - and I was in the cockpit in 30 seconds. Would not have been fast enough for open or perforated toerails but on that boat with nice bulwarks we recovered it before it washed down a deck drain. Day lady chore the next day was checking, tightening, and mousing every shackle we could reach. I worried about halyard shackles the rest of the trip. *grin*

Re: Using headphones on night watch?

I don't have any alarms on my boat, I hate alarms
Radio off. Cant hear it from the cockpit anyway.
